Hi, the user manual that came with it explains how to do this. Note however that most cable channels probably won't be broadcasting at 1080i, so you won't see much of a difference. You should also be using a component (red green and blue for video, and red and white for audio) or HDMI cable rather than a composite (yellow for video and red and white for audio) cable to get the best possible quality.

Even when I receive HDTV chanels, the display reflects only 480.

No adjustments can be made on the TV since the channels are being pick up with the resolution they are being broadcasted. Once the TV tunes to a digital channel(s), it will show the resolution to be either 480i, 720p or 1080i

Adjusting the resolution from 480i to 1080i

Typically TVs will auto adjust to the input signal it receives. If your cable box is only outputting 480i then all the tv will show is 480i. Ensure you have a good 1080i signal going in to the unit and check again

I have a sony 32 inch xbr TV (myt first non analog). HOw do you change the resolution from 480i to 1080i. What is the difference between 1080i and 1080p Thanks for your help. Maria

The resolution can only be change on your resolution source (ie cable box, dvd, etc). On your cablebox go to menu/setting->audio/video->output resolutions->and here you can change the setting. The main difference between i and p is how the video is scanned. I is interlaced, meaning you get the odd lines of video, then the even lines, and the picture may flutter but its better for fast action. P is progressive giving all the lines of video at once, better for still images, but slower of some tvs.

480i is displayed on the 62HM95 even when I play my Sony BluRay

I called toshiba (the television manufacturer) and they told me that the tv recognized the devices and then adjusts to the resolution according to the device of where its receiving the signal (HDMI).In this case my blu ray was not set to the 1080i resolution. Yesterday I set it up and BAM there it was.

Wii hd componet cables

sounds like the screen size on the tv and wii needs to be adjusted. look in the wii settings to adjust that and also see if there is a output resolution that you can change to tell the wii that you're using component. component uses 480i-1080i resolution so there shouldn't be much that you have to change.

There is a hidden setup on cable box.  Search manual on box.  I have the same TV with a Scientific Atlanta HD DVR.  If you turn off the cable box and hold the Guide + Info Buttons down, it will go into supported resolution setup.  My TV now goes to the appropriate resolution (480i, 720p or 1080i) what ever the channel is broadcasting.

If you're talking about off-the-air (outside antenna) reception, the set should take care of the switching automatically. If you receive the video from a set top box, DVD player/recorder, SAT receiver or CATV receiver, you may have to set the output resolution of the device. Bear in mind, composite video (yellow jack) is 480i only, S-video is rated 480i or 480p, component video (RGB) can do all resolutions and HDMI can't do 480i but does all the other resolutions. If you are plugging your external device into either composite or S-video, you will only get 480 max.
