How do I reformat my WD Caviar HD1600 without data loss? To use it, the mssg states: must reformat. However, a 2nd mssg states that all data will be lost. How can I access my data?

Its a pop-up window that I think is created by Windows. Both the HD and Laptop were up and running. VistaHome v6. The HD 'is' or 'was' the backup. I guess the question now is how to back up a backup that isn't accessible?

doing a "reformat" will loose data. What is creating this message? windows? after starting up pre starting up?
    what version?
there really isnt a way to format a drive and not loose data unless you back it up first.

You can't unless you can back it up with a usb stick that would be big enough to hold it.

WD passport fried I think. Can I reformat?

Well in this case, formatting should no be performed. the Western Digital data recovery tool should be taken a try first of all. If it doesn't help, then take the device for data recovery services if the data is really important to you.

Remember - DO keep the deivice safe from data overritten or physical damage. Regards.

Micro SD not reading

If you are unable to access/view the contents of the card, chances are, it needs to be reformatted for it to work again, which means, data will be loss. You may, however, try to search the web for a data recovery program which you can first try to use before reformatting the drive.

Installing new hard drive

hi,

its brand new right? have it reformatted for the first time. you can do this by installing an OS and it prompts you to reformat it. actually, there are other ways to do that but for me, this is the most secure way to reformat a new harddrive in your situation.

hope this helps.
