Question about KitchenAid P Series Trash Compactor - 15" - Black on Stainless Refrigerators

2 Answers

My foot pedal does not activate the compactor when I lift up on it. It will still open the drawer when I step on it. I think it was forced (by an unnamed culprit) when I had it on Solid Cycle instead of lifting up on the foot pedal a second time as I usually do. I would appreciate any help you could offer. Thanks, Beth

Thanks for your idea. My son was over tonight and looked at it. When he pushed the white button at the bottom front of the machine it worked, so the motor is OK. It appears to have a broken piece that usually hits that button.
I am planning to call Kitchen Aid to see if they have the part that is conspicuously missing.

    Thanks,
    Beth

Look to the pedal for your answer. The pedal activates a switch that could have gone bad...provided your pedal and the, (for lack of a better term), the linkage that actuates the switch is in tact and functioning. You can better diagnose by trying to manually activate the switch that is normally activated by the pedal and linkage theron. If the switch when manually activated works the unit, then the problem is with the pedal and or linkage that is supposed to work the switch. It when the switch is manually activated the unit does not work, I'd test the switch to see if it should be replaced. Good Luck. I hope you find this very helpful!

Hello Beth, I can assist you. Let's begin by turning off the circuit breaker that supplies power to your compactor. Leave that breaker off for at least two minutes. Then turn the power back on and try your compactor. If that reset procedure does not solve the problem the next likely cause is that the motor has gone bad. If that is the case the motor will have to be replaced with a rebuilt one. Thanks for choosing fixya!

I have a GE trash compactor I have to hold up the foot pedal for it to work. When I let it go the compactor stops. thank you

There is a spring that holds up the pedal. It is broken or has come apart. By the pedal in the up position it is a safety switch allowing the compactor to run. You may have to repair this or simply put a small block under the pedal of the unit to run.
I hope my suggestions helps and all the luck to you.

Compactor will not operate. The foot lift switch will not work to turn compactor on. I don't know if the compactor is in the full up position or down because when we got home...our 21 year old daughter...

You probably need to replace the actuator switch, part #9871976. This is a piece of metal that is attached to the foot pedal and pushes in the start button when foot pedal is lifted. Mine has broken twice.

Craftsman motorcycle jack model KT2002050642 - I

There should be some notches either in the top rails or the bottom. If I remember right they were on the bottom. Looks like peices of small round rod welded. Maybe 3 or 4.
Look for the locker arm and see where you need to lift them up from. You will have to have the jack raised enough to loosen teh arms to make them come away from the welded peices.

Compactor will not close and latch. I removed the trash bag and installed a new one then closed the drawer like normal, only drawer would not stayed closed. It just bounces back out.

you will need to remove the entire Drawer to see if somthing fell behind inside.

Most of the time you can pull the drawer all the way out and lift the front of the drawer and pull it out.

Trash Compactor Model GCG1500LOBB. the foot

I also found that after 2 years my GE Profile Trash Compactor (purchased in June '07), the pedal was hanging down on the left side. I searched the internet and called GE to no avail.

After a few attempts, I finally solved the problem by removing the screw on the left side and adding a metal "L" bracket, with the bottom of the L flush against the back of the front panel. That way, when you depress the pedal, the screw can't pop out of the metal it's attached to.

Good luck!

GE Profile trash compactor is stuck

This has happened a couple times to me and the fix is fairly simple. The problem is the trash ram is pushing down on the edge of the metal of the trash compartment because the door is partially open. The solution is to back-up the ram the the door will close.

To back-up the ram, you will need to pull the compactor out from under your cabinets and unplug it. Turn the compactor on it's side to expose the bottom. There is a plate on the bottom that covers the motor gears. Remove the plate and turn the large gear counter-clockwise to back-up the ram screws (at least this is how it works on my model works). The gears are a little greasy so you may need to add some after messing with the gears.

Good luck.

Have a Viking trash compactor VUC181 that will not open. Appears latch is broke. How can I get it open?

I have had this same problem and found two causes. Latch was never the problem.
#1 - Ram not in full up position. To check remove top plate and attempt to run compactor - depressing microswitch when ram is at the top. If compactor will not run you can check the ram position by turning the primary screw drive with a ratchet wrench. When ram is at the top position attempt to open the compactor drawer. The stop microswitch seems to frequently bend out of alignment - check the microswitch positioning before resecuring top plate and adjust if necessary.
#2 - Can (or other debris) is wedged in between ram and drawer. Remove back cover and carefully inspect insides of the unit - use a flashlight. Pry out any debris that may impede the drawer from opening. Attempt to open the compactor drawer.

Good luck,

Jenn-aire compacter can't close

Hi marigf5,

I'm Harvey the Master Plumber.

Your problem is: you cannot get your compacter to close.

First, don't force it. Chances are something has fallen behind the drawer and is in the way. Just remove the drawer and clear it. If something is broken, you still have to remove the drawer to see and repair it. If you run into trouble you might consider utilizing the Repair Directory to find a repairman.
