Question about HP COMPAQ DESKTOPS DC7800 ULTRA-SLIM PENTIUM DUAL CORE E2180 2GHZ / 1GB / 80GB HDD / INTEL GMA 3100 ...

1 Answer

HP s3100n will not boot from hard drive or DVD drive. seems to be intermittent, sometimes the boot menu comes up... I increased memory, installed new hard drive. On the one occasion that the boot menu came up, I ran the restore disks, it completely restored, then on re-boot it hung up and stopped working during the windows progress bar display.

I want to turn a memory stick into hard drive. How can i do that?

you will need usb data drive at least 4 - 8 gb

Download the GParted Live utility and the HP USB Format Tool via the links in Resources.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=5757&file=15&evp=fb0a8fee133295405b5af3205e8d2424

Insert your USB stick into the computer. Run HP USB Format Tool. Select your USB stick and then choose the FAT or FAT32 format options. Click "Start."

Extract the files from the GParted Live zip file. Select the USB stick as the destination.

Open a file browser and navigate to the USB stick. Select "utils" > "win32" > "makeboot.bat." Double click on "makeboot.bat." Enter "Y" when prompted.

Power off your computer leaving the USB stick inserted.

Connect your portable hard drive to another USB port.

Power on the computer and quickly press "F8" through "F12" to access your boot menu.

Check your computer or motherboard manual for the exact keystroke.

Select the USB stick as your boot source and press "Enter." Allow the Gparted GUI to start.

Select the external portable hard disk drive. Click "Partition" on the menu bar.

Hover over "Format to" and select "NTSF."

If you are unable to create or format the partition, select delete partition.

This will erase all data on the external hard drive. Confirm partition deletion. Select the external drive again. Click "Partition" and hover over "Format to" then select "NTSF."

Select the external hard disk drive again. Click "Partition" on the menu bar and then "Manage Flags." Check the box next to "Boot." Save and apply changes to the drive.

Power off your computer and remove the USB stick.

Install the OS

Insert or plug your OS installer, usually a DVD, CD or USB thumb drive, into the computer. Power on the computer and access the boot manager again.

Select the source containing your OS installer and press "Enter."

Enter your personalization and registration information if required.

When prompted, specify the portable hard drive as the install directory.

Begin the installation normally.

Restart the computer when prompted and access the boot menu again. Select the external hard drive as your boot source and press "Enter" to ensure the installation succeeded.

Use this process to boot from your portable drive on any computer.

hope this helps

Hello, It seems I have to re format my HP 1000 Mini. It will not start in Safe or any other mode from the advaced options menu. It just goes to a blank screen when you do select anything on the advanced...

You cannot use another laptop as an external drive.
I would not try a re-install just yet though. The bios will try to boot from your selected device and a failure to boot usually gives an error message of some sort. I would first try to get a boot CD/DVD that will let you boot up and check the hard drive for errors. If you have a bootable windows CD/DVD this may allow you to carry out diagnostics before you resort to full re-install.

My pavilion s3100n when turned on just makes this clicking sound and the screen says "failed to boot replace disk and press enter" any clues

The clicking sound is most likely the "Click of Death" an indicator of a failed hard disk drive. The drive is having a hardware malfunction and the read/write armature in the drive is moving back and forth against the internal stops (this gives the click)
Replace the hard drive in the system

How do i remove the dvd from an hp s3100n desktop.

You need to take the cover off the computer on both sides. Normally the optical drive is secured by four screws, two on the left and two on the right. Take those screws out and slide the drive forward enough to get to your memory stick. You may not have to unplug the cables, but if you can't slide it out far enough you will.

I own a hp pavilion slimline s3100n computer. Yesterday I turned it on and it kept freezing on me, so I did a system recovery and that helped nothing. Now when I turn it on the blue power light comes on...

I had a similar problem that when I turn on the power, the blue power light comes on but nothing occurs, even the bios page. For a while it succeeded to boot every several tries but it became necessary to try tens of times before it booted correctly. After it started the machine ran quite well, except when I make the machine sleep, then the machine would never wake up.
I found that the MB for s3100n has a common problem of this sort and HP even has sent out an email warning possible failure. When it actually happened to my machine it was too late: the warranty has expired more than a year. The replacement MB was above $250 and even if I buy it it is likely to fail again.
What I did instead was to get a microATX case with power supply, CPU cooler and a mother board and reuse all other parts from the failed s3100n. I wanted to reuse the DDR2-800 memory (my memory was upgraded) and athlon X2 4000+, so Asrock N68-S motherboard was a good choice. You can recycle HDD, DVD burner (SATA), card reader and wireless (internal USB), keyboard and mouse (PS2) as well. It was the first time I replaced a mother board but the case and mobo manual contained enough information to do the wiring. If your HDD is good Windows vista will boot in the new hardware. Get new drivers from Asrock/NVidia and install them to get the graphics and audio working correctly. Don't forget to re-activate Windows Vista using the product key which is stickered on the side of the s3100n chassis before you throw it away.

RAM replace on Hp pavilion slimline s3100n PC

Ok, what you've got to do are the following.

1. Remove outer cover. (you've obviously already done this)
2. Remove holder for personal storage device.
Pull up brown/black lever untill the unit lifts up and out
3. You can now see black screw holding in DVD/RW Drive - remove it.
4.Lift latch that you described
5. Push DVD Drive forward until you can access the memory

I have a s3100n hp slim line pavillion and thru hp tech support was advised to do a system recovery. when i tryed to reboot my system some programs were missing and they hp said that i need the recovery...

You must go into the BIOS on boot up and choose to boot from CD-Rom instead of the hard drive. When you first turn on your machine and the HP comes up push F10 key to get into the BIOS. Look for boot priorities and put the CD/DVD Rom in the first boot position (directions on how to move these item up/down are at the bottom of the page)

Then your disks will be useful. Put one in and reboot. It should read you disc and follow instructions from there.

Hope this helps you, good luck

Hangs up on boot

It is trying to boot from a network. You need to get it to boot from the optical drive (CD/DVD drive), there's no other way of installing the os, unless you can get another identical machine to load it with. If it doesn't recognize the optical in the boot menu, then you may have been more than a hard drive crash.
