My copy doesn't work either. Every time I try to download he required upgrade the "download" button won't work. At first I too thought it was an expiration date thing, but then noticed that the expiration date is November 3, 2010 - that's next year.

All Blue Ray players need to be updated from time to time to keep up with the growing technology of Blue Ray. PS3 is the same way. It is asking you to update your PS3 in order to play the disc. On the back of the PS3 is a Ethernet port (looks like an over sized phone jack) connect this to your internet (modem) and it will update your encryption key and software needed to play Blue Ray discs. Here is a link for that as well.

How to perform system software update to renew encryption key on my playststion 3

You may have to renew the AACS encryption key to play content such as movies on commercially available BD video software (BD-ROM). If a message indicating that the encryption key needs to be renewed is displayed, update the system software to the latest version. The encryption key will then be automatically renewed.
AACS (Advanced Access Control System) is a copyright-protection technology that is used on Blu-ray Discs. The copyrighted content is protected by setting an encryption key on both the disc and the device used to play the disc.
An AACS encryption key expires in 12 to 18 months and must be renewed. There may also be other times when the key has to be renewed. in the manual

My ps3 won't play blue ray movies!

Cause

PS3 has a AACS (Advanced Access Control System) is a copyright-protection technology that is used on Blu-ray Discs. The copyrighted content is protected by setting an encryption key on both the disc and the device used to play the disc.

An AACS encryption key expires in 12 to 18 months and must be renewed, so no matter if you have a new PS3 or using it already make sure you keep upgrading your PS3 firmware regularly.

Solution

There are two ways to update as listed below:

* Update via Internet
* Update via Storage Media

Download the update data directly to the system from the Internet. The latest update is automatically downloaded.

Select Settings -> System Update, Download the latest update data from the Internet. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the operation.

You also perform this system update via a storage media, Use update data saved on a disc, Memory Stick™ or other media. Download the update data from a Web site using a PC

Hope this helps, Wishing you happy holidays and happy Gaming

I have a ps3 as well, mine does not have have a phone jack, but it does have an ethernet jack. I am hoping that yours is the same. If you connect it to your internet via an ethernet jack, the key should update when you go to the system settings.

HOW DO I RENEW THE ENCRYPTION KEY ON MY PS3?...IT SAYS I HAVE TO DO THAT IN ORDER TO PLAY MY BLUE RAY DVD?

You'll need to upgrade your software to your ps3.

You can read about it here:

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/2_60/video/aacs.html

Then on that page click on where it says "update the system software".

It will bring you to another page that shows you the different ways to update the software on your ps3.
