Re: CPU is unworkable message at boot up

Try resetting the BIOS. Maybe some of the settings were lost if the motherboard's BIOS battery died.

Possibly power supply issue and/or replace the battery on your motherboard

On boot up on my Dimension 3100C I receive the following error message: Drive 1 not found:Parallel ATA, PATA-0 (PRI IDE Master) Alert! chipset heat sink not detected System halted!

first off your going to ewant to hit f2 or f12 to get into setup and you are going to want to change boot oder to your hard drive. i then would open the comoputer up by taking the side of the case off and checking your cpu. u are going to wanna make sure there is a heatsink or fan securly on your cpu. if not this could over heat and burn your cpu up. heat sinks look like thisbadboy616.png

Dell logo appears and message appears INSERT BOOT DISKETTE...

A couple of things can cause this.

1] having the 'boot order' set up so that the computer looks to a removable device that has non-bootable media in it.
2] somehow the 'boot' device has lost it's 'boot' properties.

Best way to troubleshoot:
1] find the boot CD
2] re-strat the machine and enter the "BIOS setup" mode <f10>, or <DEL>; I think::verify the boot order
this should likely be: C: ; CD ; A:

allow machine to start with CD and check to see if anything on the wanted 'boot' device has been lost; sometimes it will get smashed.

Let us know what you get after this point, because I would rather give you an answer based on knowledge from this part of the exercise.

Blue screen of death.

Try re-seating the RAM (memory sticks) with the system turned off. Clean out any dust from inside the PC, especially on the CPU fan.

Try this! Open your CPU there you will find CMOS battery remove it and reinsert and there will be a BIOS pin remove it and reconnect. Now Switch On the system.

Cpu is unworkable or has been change check soft menu

What is the model number of the board?

If you were able to boot, then you defiantly got the CPU in properly. Sounds like you just need some tweaking in the bios.
