Open Question

My Canon PixmaMP170 is sayins 'Check ink VO51 blk

My Canon PixmaMP170 is saying 'Check ink VO51 blk col'. There are brand new ink cartridges in there and I've tried everything I can think of, could someone please help! We recently replaced the colour with a re-fill but the black ink is a brand new cartridge. My girlfriend really needs to use the printer for her coursework. If anyone could offer a solution i thank you !

For me, this meant that I put it an ink cartridge that wasn't compatible.

SOURCE: Canon MP610 out of black ink

Cannon Pixma MP610 - when the black ink is empty and you receive the replace ink message, then hold down the "cancel" button for 5 seconds or so and it the printer automatically bypasses the problem. It does work but Ive had mixed success in terms of the print quality when doing this.

Are you using an aftermarket cartridge or one produced by Canon? I've had both success and failure with aftermarket cartridges. They are cheaper but sometimes that comes with a price: high failure rate. There might by plenty of ink in the cartridge but the chip in the front that the printer reads could have failed even though it's new. Try another black cartridge as a test. Here is a link to a site where this is explained in more detail:

Ink problems col vol unknown and wont print

Something that worked for me, I opened the Conon MX310. took out both cartridges, and for 10 seconds I held the Reset. put the cartridges back in, closed the lid, and again, for another 10 seconds held the reset. SLOW seconds. this reset, ink levels recognised,, and it's working as it should be.
