Question about Belkin N1 Wireless USB 2.0 Network Adapter (S6359026)

2 Answers

I have a Belkin F6D4050 150N wireless USB adapter paired with a Belkin F6D4230-4 wireless N Router. I have "excellent" signal strength and an indicated connection speed of 135Mbps. I am paying my ISP (Cox) for greater bandwidth for my high speed internet. Two other computers in the household also connect through the router using 802.11g adapters. Both of these computers get an indicated 18-21 Mbps download speed when tested with speedtest.net, yet I only get 6-6.2 Mbps download speeds on mine. What can I do to get the higher download speeds that I expected when I bought this combination?

Apparently, you misunderstood my problem. Please read it again. There is an apparent bottle neck between my USB 802.11n adapter and my 802.11n router causing me to get a slower speed reading than the two computers with the 802.11g adapters. What I'd like to kow is if there is a setting I can apply to my 802.11n USB adapter that will solve this.

Please review the comments in this string. I do not believe the first "expert" understood my problem. FYI: I cannot get Belkin to even reply to my inquiries

Hi,
Based on all the information you have given me. I would recommend you purchase a new router and adapter from a store like wal-mart. I would then try one and then the other to isolate where the problem is. It is probably a problem with one of the two since I am assuming you got them new and neither has proven its wireless N speeds yet. That is what I would do to troubleshoot the problem. Then you will know what needs to be returned to the store and what needs to be replaced. wireless G was kind of the same way. I have 4 of those routers just in case and sitting around. i am sure I will end up doing the same when I move up to the N standard.
Hope this helps.
Thank you,
lee

Also I forgot to put first. have you downloaded the latest drivers for the adapter? also have you checked to see if there is an update for the firmware on the router? That is the first thing you will want to do.
    Thank you,
    lee

Please check if there is any update process working behind/check stopping the firewall. Another thing is if the host server is not replying you correctly(the host server's traffic is not faster) then you may face the issue of download speed. Try with Internet download manager/ Download accelerator. One thing what speed the speedtest.net is indicating may be you will get less speed than that. it suppose to be 15-16 Mbps or less. anyway try downloading with Internet Download Manager/Download Accelerator. Hope you may reach nearest your expectation. Thanks for joining Fixya....Good Luck

Thanks for clearing the issue...But I understand that the router transimits the wifi signal equal for all adapter, but it depends on distance, because the far you staying, the signal getting lower till to your place. For that reason, may be you getting low download speed. If inspite of all pcs in same place and your pc is getting lower download speed, change your wireless device..and try..I don't think any change in setting to be made for higher download speed inspite of your signal strength is Excellent. because excellent signal means not 100%...may be it's up to 50% ...Thats all...Thanks for joining Fixya...Wish you good luck

Either move the computer closer to the router or the router closer to the computer. You could also try connecting the usb adapter to a usb hub to remove any interference from the computer.

I have a Belkin wireless router connected to a Virgin modem. Always has worked fine with a Compaq laptop and 2 Dell Inspiron netbooks with excellent signal. Now have tried to connect with an Acer Revo rl...

Hello,
The router is designed in such a that it is compatible with all the computers. The best way to get rid of this issue is log into the router interface and change the wireless channel to suit your requirement.
1) To begin with.. Open internet explorer on a computer connected to the router and delete everything from the address bar and type http://192.168.2.1 and hit enter. Now you will be in the Belkin Router setup. It will ask for a login password when you click on anything.. Leave the password field blank and click on submit. 2) Towards the left side under wireless click on "Channel and SSID". Now you see wireless channel change it to different channel and click on "OK / Save". Now check the signal strength in your Acer computer. If its still the same try different channel and check.
Hope this helped.

My icon says I only have 80% signal strength, is

80% is a good signal strength....but if you want to increase the signal strength, then you need to move the wireless router to a very ventilated area, also the router should be placed atleast 5 feet away from other electronic devices like, modem, ups, microwave ovens, refrigerators etc.... also there should be a line of sight between the router and the wi-fi adapter... but in order to connect to a wireless network 25% of signal strength is enough....

Very low signal

Given that you have a '802.11B' device, the maximum speed will be 11 Mbps.

While your wireless router is communicating at that speed to your computer, the router is communicating with your ISP at a much-lower speed, depending on how much you pay per month to your ISP for the agreed-upon level of service, e.g., "ADSL-lite" or "High-Speed".

So, unless you pay more per month to your ISP, the "bottleneck" will be between your ISP and your router, *NOT* between your router and your wireless adapter.

Now, as to the "low signal strength", that's a matter of the distance between the router and your computer, and the number and composition of the walls and ceilings in the middle.

If you move your computer closer to the router, the signal-strength should become "good" or "excellent".

Belkin 802.11a/b/g usb adapter

It sounds like the plug on the USB wireless dongle is bad or the usb ports in your computer are having problems. My Toshiba notebook does the same thing with the two usb ports near the front of the computer but works fine from the two on the back. When you have a flash drive plugged into the USB do you frequently get the new hardware found message as if you had unplugged and replugged the drive? If you have a powered external USB hub try plugging that in first then when that is stable plugging the USB wireless dongle into the hub rather than the computer. If it is stable then the problem is on the power pin in the USB port of your computer. Good Luck
