Does anyone know how to fix error 5 code?

Many Zune users will tell you of the dreaded error 5.

When the error occurs it means that the Zune has encountered a problem that it cannot recover from and informs users to contact customer support.

Usually to fix this error, the Zune must be sent to Microsoft. If the Zune is under warranty and the owner is within the US, this is little more than an inconvenience.

If the owner is outside of the US this is not and option and if the warranty has expired, the fix can come at a high price.

However, before sending a Zune off to Microsoft for fixing, there are a number of things to try.

The first thing to try would be to restart the Zune.

The steps to restart the device vary based on Zune model. For the Zune HD player, the user should press and hold the on/off button for roughly ten seconds and the player will reset.

For the non-touchscreen models of Zune, the user should unlock the hold switch.

Then, press and hold the back button and the top button of the Zune pad. The device should restart and the user can release the buttons.

If this does not fix the error, then the user should try reinstalling the software on their Zune device.

To reinstall the software on a Zune HD, the user should press and hold the on/off button for about ten seconds.

When the device restarts, the user should press and hold the "Media" button until the message "Connect Zune To Your PC" displays on the screen.

The user should make sure they have the most up to date Zune software installed on their computer and connect the Zune.

Update the Zune and it should be ready for use again. If the user continues to experience problems, then the Zune HD software may have to be completely deleted and reinstalled. Doing this will completely delete everything on the Zune, so anything that has not been backed up will be lost, including purchased items.

To do this, the user should hold down the on/off button again until the Zune HD restarts.

Upon restarting, the user should immediately press both the "Media" and the "Home" buttons until "Connect Zune To Your PC" displays.

The user should then connect their Zune HD to a computer with the most up to date Zune software and update the Zune.

For the non-touchscreen Zune models, the following step will erase user data (including purchased items), so a backup is recommended.

First, the user should unlock the hold button.

Then the back button and the top button should both be pressed and held down.

The next step varies by model. For owners with a Zune 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 80GB, and 120GB, the Back button, Zune pad, and Play/Pause button should all be pressed and held down.

The user should continue to hold them until they get a "Please wait" message.

For owners of the Zune 30GB, the Back button, the left side of the Zune pad, and the center of the Zune pad should all be held down until "Please wait" displays.

After data is cleared, the message "Connect Zune To Your PC" will appear.

The user should connect the Zune to a computer with the most recent version of the Zune software installed on it.

After the software is installed, the Zune should be ready for use.

If these measures fail to fix error 5, then the Zune owner will likely have to send the device to Microsoft as the problem is deeper than a software issue.

Sadly, it is not always clear what causes error 5 to occur. In these cases, there are few other options than to leave it to the experts.

hope this helps

I have a brand new Zune 8 GB player, given as a gift. I downloaded the Zune Software, but when I connect the player by the USB cable, the Zune program does not recognize a Zune as being connected. Also,...

Try this....
Reset Zune: Press and hold the back button while pressing up on the control pad.
Connect Zune to a power source: If the Zune device is in sleep mode, this action will wake the Zune device and turn it on. If the battery does not have a charge, you may have to wait several minutes for the Zune device to turn on.

Also, make sure that the hold button on top of your zune is turned to the off position.

Hope this helps

ALL YOUR BASE BELONG TO US - is a video that must have been loaded on the Zune previously.

if all else fails...

If you connected the ZUNE to your computer before installing the software the computer may have installed it as a different device.

Go to Control Panel - then System - Device Manager. Plug in ZUNE player and see if any new devices show as being connected. BE CAREFUL IN DEVICE MANAGER THOUGH, IF YOU UNINSTALL THE WRONG ITEM, IT COULD MESS YOUR COMPUTER UP.

If this works rate it a FIX-YA!

Problem with intalling zune's software

Uninstall all zune software and download and install it again. Possibly a bad download.

Or run error check on your computer then try it again.

Go to my computer, right-click on C: - go to properties- then go to TOOLS tab. Click on Error check - make sure you have both boxe(s) checked to fix errors as they are found then hit start. You will have to restart your computer for this check to happen. Usually takes a a few hours, but recommended to do at least once every few months.

Hope this helps!

Zune charging problems, hardware problems

I had a 30g w/same problem. I installed the Zune software from CD. Plugged the Zune into my USB jack and waited hrs for the full screen battery icon to go away. It never did. Here is what I did to fix it. I left the Zune disconnected until its battery drained and the lcd went dark. In this state, pressing the play/pause button, caused the full screen battery icon to appear briefly before the lcd went dark again. With the Zune disconnected from my xp pc, I ran Windows Update in express mode. I have Windows system restore and auto-update turned off and rarely update my pc, so I also took the opportunity to take a manual system check-point (so I could restore from the check-point if an update trashed my pc). I took and installed all the latest Windows updates. When it was done, I had all the latest security updates and IE 7. At this point I went to and downloaded the latest Zune software. I installed the Zune software update. I ran the new Zune software on my PC and found the device tab. NOW I connected the Zune to a USB port on the back of my PC. The full screen battery icon appeared on the Zune but nothing appeared in the Zune software. I left it this way for a few minutes. It occurred to me that I might get more power through the USB port if I turned off my other external USB devices, which I did. Within a few minutes, the Zune FINALLY came to life and a Zune splash screen appeared on the device. The device booted and was FINALLY recognized by the Zune software on my PC. Shortly after that I noticed that it already started synchronizing with my PC music collection. I figured it would charge up and download my entire collection (20gig) so I grabbed some sleep for a few hours. When I returned, the PC was asleep too. Unfortunately, the Zune was not charged and had stopped sync'ing. Not to be discouraged, I woke up the PC, exited the Zune software and left the device charging for an hour or so. When I returned, the device was about 80% charged. I quickly disconnected and played my first music video on the device!!!! I reconnected (the Zune software auto-launched) and left it sync'ing and charging for a while longer. When it was 100% charged, I disconnected and have been using it for a few hours. It was a long painfull road to get this thing setup, but it was WELL WORTH IT! I am already a huge fan of this device. In fact, I'm considering passing this one on to my wife so I can get the 80gig. Hang in there, it's worth it!!!!

PS: one sidebar -- I have noticed that the pc software will only sync about 800 songs in a session. I have simply been restarting the sync to get the next session going. At this point, I am fully synchronized and have 4.5 gig free.
