The lcd screen was showing reinsert tape. I tried the whack it on the side as was posted, now it takes the tape just fine! However, when I play a tape on normal speed there are tiny boxes that go off and on on screen and audio goes in and out. On slow play, no problems. only on regular speed.

I tried whacking the side of the hancycam as seen on some posts. Now it goes in and our just fine. When playing a tape and looking at the screen, the audio goes in and our and tiny boxes jump around on the screen. This does not happen on slow motion play

I`ve repaired many of those camera and the problem is almost always the capstan motor that does`nt turn . You see when the camera detects a tape it will try to rewind and forward the tape a couple of turns to take up any slack or to see if the cassette is not defective(jammed), then it will load the tape, but if the capstan motor is not able to turn that tape then it won`t. There could be a number of reason the motor can`t turn the reels, the motor or the circuit that drives the motor could be faulty or you may want to look inside the camera for debris i.e;stickers for identifying tapes that fell into the mechanics and blocks the reels.
Hope this will help. good luck

Please check video head (drum assembly) does it spin when you close tape door with tape inside?
If video head does not spin, camcorder will not load tape, though mechanism will be loaded with out tape inside.
Post back your comments/ findings to provide you further info.
Thanks.

Does camcorder show any error sign in its LCD while rejecting tape loading?
it might be blinking error code like C:31:00 or some thing similar? or Dew sensor sign, a drop in yellow color?
Post as comments to find out problem reason.
    Thanks.

My Sony DCR-TRV33 won't accept a cassette. It will close itself up without a cassette tape in place, but not while a cassette is inserted. I have tried several different tapes, so it is not the cassette.

Hi wnwatkins3,

Have the same problem here. Bought my TVR33 in 2003, and its still
a good cam with 1 megapixel. But since 1 month the tape won't load. I can insert any tape in the cassette, but it won't close. Without a tape it closes fine.
My only option is to send it to frsbenelux to fix it for a few hundred euros. Hoping to find a solution on the net, i will share with ya.

Sony DCR-hc42 video camera problems

Buy a Sony-make head cleaning cassette and play it in the camera for 10 seconds. Do not play for more time, neither forward or reverse the cleaning cassette, otherwise you will damage the head of the camera. This cleaning cassette is to be thrown when it is fully played (and not rewound!).

Camera will not insert tape. Mechanism works OK without tape. Sony dcr-hc42

A C31:40 error indicates that the drum (the spinning video head) is either not spinning or is not supplying a signal to the main computer to tell the computer it is spinning. It could be a bad drum or a loose connection. It will likely take a qualified technician to verify the diagnosis.

  1. I'm having the exact same problem. It wont accept the cassette...only half way then errors. It will close fully without a cassette as well. hmmmmm
Comment by Guest, posted on Apr 02, 2008 Load cassette, turn it on, then message says re-load cassette. Door to cassette compartment only works half way. After fiddling with power, can get the cassette door to open and close all the way, but not with cassette. Tried several brands of cassettes, no joy.
