Question about Nikon CoolScan V ED Film Scanner

1 Answer

Switching on the scanner light is blinking for a few seconds. Then a message appears: "The scanner has reported an hardware error. Please reset the scanner by switching on and off. If this does not work, please contact your local Nikon Service or Support office". We did switch on and off, several times, without success. We installed the software again, and tried the same on an other PC, all under Windows Xp SP3. No success. what should we do?

    Hi,
As sending the scanner for service is cumbersome I kindly ask you to review the situation with the additional information (in bold) as this might be a hint to some easier way to solve the problem:
"When I switched on the scanner for the first time, after completion of software setup, Nikon Scan 4 issued this message: "The scanner has reported an hardware error. Please reset the scanner by switching on and off. If this does not work, please contact your local Nikon Service or Support office".
After that however the alarm message did not come up and I was able to happily use the scanner scanning about ten photos from a negative film.
A couple of days later the error was reported again and any attempt to use the scanner was unsuccessful even if I tried turning the scanner on and off several times and repeating the software startup."
    Thank you in advance.
    Best regards
    Jorg

Hi,
You should do what the unit and nikon recommends and that is having the unit serviced. You can start the repair process here:
http://www.nikonusa.com/Service-And-Support/Service-And-Repair.page
That is what I recommend. If you have any other questions or need further assistance please let me know.
Thank you,
Lee

    Hi,
If i understand what your saying correctly. You turned it on and off and it was able to scan a few more negatives. then the same error occurred and now won't go away? That would be the tell tale sign that its a hardware failure. The hardware was most likely failing and the reset let you get a little more use out of it. I still highly recommend having it serviced. If you do not find that option viable I suggest replacing the unit.
    Thank you,
    Lee

Orange light continues to blink indicating a information message. Says to clean pinch rollers - I did. Reset counts both on operator utility and on the scanner. Light blinks. How do I turn it off?

These blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
Blinking codes details to many popular brand TVs are given. Surf the site with patience.
If blinks continue without any pause, the main board is faulty.

Hard reset fuji finepix

When an error occurs to your camera, you should switch it off and wait till you see not any light (blinking). While a light is on or blinking, the camera could be accessing the memory, causing serious damage to the file system.
When the camera is off, remove the battery. Wait a few seconds and then replace the battery.
If the error returns, you should contact the service centre closest to you.
There is no more, sorry.

The light on the scanner is flashing intermittently hence it will not operate

When the light bar flashes or blinks, the built-in diagnostics are reporting the hardware is not functioning as expected; it does not necessarily mean the scanner is defective. Before contacting HP for service, perform the following:
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Disconnect the power cord and USB or parallel cable from the back of the scanner.
  3. Unlock the transport lock several times to ensure it is not restricting the movement of the carriage. Make sure it is fully open before proceeding to Step 4.
  4. Wait 60 seconds before connecting USB or parallel cable and the power cord to the scanner.
  5. Turn on the computer and rescan to test.
If the light bar flashing is accompanied by a 2117 error, also try the troubleshooting steps included in document: Bps03134 - Scanner not Responding 2093, Unidentified Program Error.

Unable to clean messgae

When trying to use your Brother machine you get the message "Unable to _____". The blank may be the word Change, Print, Scan or Clean and these words may vary from model to model.
This message is a general message and will appear for different reasons. It often indicates a paper jam or a mechanical issue. Complete the following to determine the possible issue.

1.
Check for foreign objects, such as a clip or ripped paper, inside the machine.
Open the scanner cover by pulling up on the lower right corner of the cover. Look inside the machine and remove any foreign objects. If you see jammed paper or another item inside this area, gently pull it out and then close the scanner cover securely.

2. If the error continues to appear, the machine may have a mechanical problem.
If the error message continues to appear, the machine will need to be reset. Resetting the machine will erase all faxes in memory and the Fax Journal Report. However, there is a way to transfer faxes in memory and the Fax Journal Report to another fax machine to print them out. Do the following to transfer the data and reset the machine.

Thanks.

"The Scanner has reported a hardware error..."

Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000008195 StartFragment:0000002796 EndFragment:0000008159 Normal 0 0 1 464 2648 22 5 3251 11.0 0 21 0 0 I brought a coolscan 9000 the last month without the film holders, software etc just the scanner. A friend of mine sold me it for a good price. I run Leopard in a Powerbook G4 15” 1.2 ghz 2 Gigas ram. I installed the Nikon scan 4 and when I open it the scanner report an error: The Scanner has reported a hardware error... every time that I run the program this message appears. I thought that this was because I hadn’t got the film holders. When the film holders arrive from USA the same problem appears : The Scanner has reported a hardware error... Them I tried Silverfast Software. In this case the scanner report another error: there are not film holder ( or something like that). I uninstalled Nikon Software with the same utility to install it. Reinstall the Software and the same ****** problem. When I switch on the scanner a loud noise came from inside, after this the blinking light stopped and nothing happen ( no calibration, no light inside, nothing). Just one thing. The Scanner has reported a hardware error...
I checked on internet and the solution of switch it of and on doesn’t work. CALL TO THE NIKON SERVICE that’s was my only solution.
Of course I didn’t . The price of the scanner was 300 Pounds.
SO I OPENED IT.
I REMOVED THE SCREWS FROM THE BACKSIDE AND FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE SCANNER. I TOOK THE METALLIC CASE OF: PICTURE 1. After a while looking everything without touch I’m start to check for the connection cables one by one, WHEN DISCOVER THAT ONE CABLE PLUG THAT GOES FROM THE SCANNER TO THE FIREWARE BOARD WAS DESCONECTED…. PICTURE 2 Maybe on the shipping this plug looses his place. SO I SWITCH ON THE SCANNER AND THE PROBLEM DOESN’T APPEAR. Now the problem was that the film holder wasn’t recognising from the scanner. So I followed the steps that most frequently indicate on the web:

1-Close the scan program –
2-Turn off and unplug the scanner
3-Plug the LS9000 back in and turn it on
4-Reopen the scan program

The scanner worked. When I switch on the scanner take a minute or so to calibrate and determinate the film holder. Them I open the Nikon Scan 4 and every looked nice. I could scan my first negative ALELUYAAAAA. So I close everything without the screws so I put the scanner vertical to put back the metal case ones I finished I turned on the scanner and the Nikon program. For my surprise the same ******* error I couldn’t believe it.

I opened it again and I found the cause of the problem . BECAUSE THE SCANNER WAS ON VERTICAL BEFORE, THE METALLIC GUIDE THAT CONNECT WITH THE SERVO WAS MOVED (Move the scanner from one place to another may cause this issue) So with my finger I putted it in the same place. THE SCANNER WORK’S.
After this the only problem was a big loud gnashing and grinding noise that I sorted with CELOTAPE BETWEEN THE TWO PIECES THAT WAS SEPARATED BEFORE.
PICTURE 3
Now the scanner work fine. Sorry for my **** English and I hope that someone can find useful this information.

First, download the software at http://www.box.net/shared/4yblbn34kg

Secondly, to run the software your printer has to be in service mode. Do that by
- unplug cable
- press and hold "power" button
- plug cable
- press "resume" and release
- release the "power" button
At this stage, your computer will detect a new hardware

Run the software.

oke

I can't seem to find a error code 5. What software are you using to scan? Did the error start right after your first? Had the scanner been working?
