Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

Open Question

PS3 freezes when I try to download software update for MW2...

Once I am on the MW2 main page, I plug in the internet cable (which I get internet on Ipod and computer.) A black screen pops up and reads something like in order to sign in and play online need version 1.03 software update. I press ok and it goes to a different screen with a loading symbol in tol left corner. Then it freezes. I've walked away, but it stays frozen. I've tried with other games as well, but same issue.
Is it the console or internet?
Can I fix it or does it need repair?

SOURCE: My PSP3 is not reading correctly games and movies

I am not sure if this is the actual problem but as with many PS consoles, they go through many firmware updates. By now they should be around 3 or 4. After Firmware 2 they, hopefully temporarily, dropped PS2 and PS1 compatibility. PS2 had 12 different firmwares 12 being the firmware for the PS2 slim. I am guessing that with the firmware they have right now for the PS3 that there are still bugs to work out. There are 2 main reasons that I am holding out on getting a PS3. Firstly, it is too darn expensive. Within a year or 2, with blu-ray winning the HDVD war, prices for Blu-ray players as well as associated technologies will go down, including the PS3.  And Secondly, The Firmware is way too new. The current firmware, as far as I know is not currently compatible with older PS consoles and still has some problems with it's own games. This might account for your problems with updates. It would be awesome, and if you want you can pose this possibility to Sony, to have flashable firmware so you can update as new firmware is introduced. Given the things I just said, you have 2 options, Either you can continue playing realizing that the problem may be with the game update and just play without it, or you can return your ps3 and wait for newer firmware to come out. If you have the money, and are willing to do some surgery on your ps3, first try resetting the internal harddrive. I am not sure how you do that. You will have to look that up online. If that doesn't work you can try buying a new hard drive (Western Digitals Scorpio Blue 500GB is a good one, i've heard. I am currently running it in my laptop. Also has a looooooooottttt of memory space for game saves. After the PS3 software is installed you have like 440-460 GB of free space). If nothing else works, just take back the system and wait for newer firmware to come out. I recommend waiting for update 7 or 8. hopefully by then, they will have added back backwards compatibility so you can play your ps2 and psone games as well.

SOURCE: ps3 goes to black screen while playing

What a retarded solution Marcus...

This is all over the internet. It has to do with HDMI handshaking between your TV and your PS3.

Search for firmware updates on your TV.
Try a different HDMI Cable
Buy a new TV :(
or go back to component cables.

I recently received the same issue since I switch to HDMI. Never had an issue when using component.

Hello

The Sony Playstation 3 suffers from software bugs like any other device. These bugs can cause the PS3 to freeze during game play, which takes away from the overall experience of using the PS3 hardware. In order to combat these bugs, Sony software team frequently sends out PS3 software updates that will defuse any major bugs as they arise.

Go to the official Sony Playstation 3 update website and download the latest PS3 software update. Each update that Sony releases fixes bugs and adds new features.

Connect a USB flash drive or memory card to your computer and create a folder inside of the USB drive or memory card named "PS3." Create a folder inside of that named "Update."

Save the downloaded PS3 update file inside of the "Update" folder on the USB flash drive or the memory card.

Pull the USB flash drive or the memory card out of the computer and connect it to your PS3. Select the "System Update" option from the PS3 main menu.

Select "Update via Storage Media" from the next screen and press the "X" button to install the latest PS3 update on your machine. This will fix any software bugs that are preventing your PS3 from working properly.

Hey, there are a few reasons this could be happening first of all you might have to little memory available if you are someone like me that never deletes there messages it adds up and slows down your ps3, second what could be happening is the lazer that reads the disk is broken or simply your mw2 is scratched hope this helped:)

Turn off PS3 system..
1: Reset your modem by unplugging it from the main power source.
2: After a few minutes, plug modem power back into modem. Allow all connections to configure
3: Turn on PS3 system.
4: Go to "Settings" then scroll all the way down to "Network Settings"
5: Make sure that the "internet connection" (the second menu) is "Enabled"
6: Go to "Internet Connection Settings" and go through the motions again.

Good luck.

My ps3 freezes in the middle of the cod mw2 game and sometimes when i try to turn it off the ps3 actually freezes, and i have to turn off the ps3 in the back switch

Try this:
  1. Back up your PS3. You will need a PS3-compatible external hard disk drive.

How to back up your PS3:

  2. Enter Recovery Mode.

  3. Choose "Rebuild Database".
  4. Choose "Restore File System".
Try COD MW2 again.
If COD is still freezing it may be a hardware problem - such as a Blu-Ray drive on it's way to failure. Call Sony.
  • If your system is still under warranty, the only cost will be $30 to ship your system back to Sony; otherwise, Sony will charge $150 to replace your PS3 with a refurbished system.

Ps3 slim turns black when i select modern warfare 2

Hello,

your PS3 is freezing simply because your console is affected by heat, so you have to cool it down.

If the freezing continues even after cooling down, you can follow the steps below:

To stop the PS3 from Freezing, you could begin by putting off your console and wait for 20 minutes. After that, put it back on.

Check if there's any loose cables. If there is, put them back in.

If the freezing continues after taking the above step, you can follow the link below as a guide on how to fix the problem.

http://www.squidoo.com/PS3-Repair-Guide

You can also try the steps below. Its from PlayStation Forum:

1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

If the above steps still does not solve the problem, then I think will have to update your Ps3.

Update your PS3 (in the settings menu the 1st option).

Go on the internet browser on the PS3 then go on the menu press triangle then on one of them there are delete cookies and the delete the others as
well as cookies.

You could also try this as well: put the PS3 on then press the eject button (with no disc in) then hold it and switch the PS3 off at the back with
your finger on the eject button still holding it, then put it back on and the fan test should be working this may cool it down. It might be over heating.

If after trying the above options and it still does not solve the problem, then maybe the lens is weak and that's why it cannot read any disc.

But if your problem is not still solved, then maybe you should call sony for further assistance.

I wish you good luck.

Playstation 3

Hey fyocksofresh,

If performing a system update with your PS3 fails, you may wish to try updating using a USB flash drive and your home computer instead. In order to do so, you'll need to create the following folders on the flash drive itself:

PS3 > Update

Once this is done, you'll want to visit the website I've provided below to download the most recent software version. The link should be easily found under the "Download the System Software" heading on the page.

http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=275

Once you've downloaded the file and transferred it onto the USB flash drive, connect the flash drive to your PS3 and choose "Update via Storage Media" instead of the normal internet option.

In the event that updating the software this way doesn't work, there are a couple of things you may wish to try before attempting again.

1) Delete all the cache files and cookies from your PS3's internet browser.

2) Power cycle your PS3 (turn it off completely, then back on) before attempting again.

3) Restore the default PS3 system settings. This should clear any potential problems that may be caused by your current system software version.

If none of these help, I'd strongly suggest contacting Sony for more information. You should be able to do so by calling their toll-free hotline at 800-345-SONY (800-345-7669) or by filling out an online repair request form.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron
