There are 2 possible causes for this issue and you may need to troubleshoot a bit to find out, the problems could be your monitor or the video card in your pc.

to find out the simplest way would be to switch your monitor for a known good monitor, test it and see if you get the grey screen. if you do the problem is your video card, if it is your video card try to go into your computer's manufacturer website or go to the video card manufacturer's website and look for an updated driver, if you give some details about the video card you have we can help find more info on it. although if you say the problem has become more evident over time it's likely you may have to replace the video card altogether.

on the other hand if the problem does not appear with the other monitor, your problem is obviously the monitor in which case check if you have any extended warranty on it and make the manufacturer or supplier honor that warranty or just get another one.

hope that helps!

Above is your manual.
All things are fixable it simply depends on if you wish to spend the $$ to repair.
In my opinion, after that long, the monitor should be replaced, as even if repaired it would still have old components in it, and we find, that once a unit faults, it will usually fail again inside of a year, according to stats too.
So you would be better putting any money for a repair into a new monitor with a warranty...

The contrast adjustment screen appears all the

Sounds to me to be either a failing button position replacement spring in the button itself. This problem also could be caused by dirt buildup surrounding the hole in the monitor bezel where the button protrudes. Try using a dental tool or something small and pointed to clear any possible debris from the buttons edges. Also some canned air may help. If these things don't fix your problem the bezel may need to be removed for a more thorough cleaning. If you are able to make it dissapear by pressing the button it most likely isn't hardware failure causing your problem, as those buttons are rarely used.

I hope that this helps fix your problem.

Good Luck

What has happened is part of your back lighting circuitry has gone out. Yes it is repairable but can cost most of what a replacement monitor will cost these days. Check that out before spending the money. If the problem is only in the back lighting circuit then expect to spend about $100 for a replacement board.

LCD monitors lifespan depends on the quality. Normal use and you should get 2-3 years of reliable service minimum. The display itself is good for about 4000 or so hours of use or more. The problems that show up are always (well 99.99% of the time) are back lighting problems like you have experienced. You should turn it off by the switch when not using it as every hour it runs the screen save is an hour of usable life. Heat is not good for it so if your computer gets the dust cleaned out to keep it cool do the monitor at the same time. Once a year at least more if you smoke use gas heat and have pets.

Tube monitors have a much longer life but you have the size weight and poorer display to go with them. If you have to go back to a tube monitor don't go back to your 14 ask around and you should be able to get a 17 or 19 crt for free. Or expect to pay no more than $10-20 for one.

My Sony SDM N80 screen has turned yellow!

Well, I have 2 of these monitors and one began acting in a similar fashion right before the cable went bad. I acquired a replacement from another person with a broken monitor but I believe this site sells them too (but they aren't cheap).

Proview PRO576 error message "mode not supported" and will show nothing else

Okay, we got a fix by having another monitor hooked up to our computer and going in to display and changing the display settings to a lower setting. The screen resolution - turn it to lower - I guess somehow - the setting was too high for our monitor. Don't know how it changed itself though. Anyway, change it to a lower resolution then re-hook up your monitor and see if it works. The reslution can be pushed back up until you notice the problem again.

I have added a sort of solution on this site. The monitor has a 3 years manufacturers warrantee on it. Goodies Enterprise Ltd of Bedford will fix it for 56GBP including shipping. They've just fixed mine and its cheaper than buying a new one. 3 months guarantee on repair.

My monitor changes colors

CRT monitors can last way past 4 years if taken care of. Please give more detail of your problem since there's not much we can tell by your description. What colors? what was the progression of the problem? can you attach a screen shot? Please comment back
