Question about Weller Welding Tools

2 Answers

I have a Weller EC 2002 Soldering Station with temperature control and a detachable Weller 102A hand soldering iron. The EC 2002 does not work. When I plug it in, the light on the temperature LED does not go on and the gun does not heat up. Where can I send this unit to have it repaired or how do I diagnose what is wrong wiht it and then identify what repair parts I will need? Thank you, Bob Luchetti - BobL@Luchetti.com

The only thing you can do,is take it apart, and use a volt meter,to find out if the transformer is bad by checking the values on the out put,and see if the wires inside are still attached.

Some of these seem to have an issue with a hybrid circuitry built on a ceramic sheet with the temp adjustment on it. I would contact Weller directly to get parts if that be the case.

Weller can probably diagnose it strictly by the probable failure.

You can check the resistance of the element in the hand tool as a start to verify the element is good. If the element is open circuit, just buy a new hand piece which you can probably find from supplier on eBay.

Hello all. I just began having a problem with my Weller WD1 Soldering Station. It powers on fine and the display works, however no matter what temperature the display says it is set to it will not hea

You might want to check the iron itself with an induction power tester to see if it is getting any power to the tip. This type of tester doesn't require any dis-assembly just close proximity to energized circuits.

Display flashes 888

This usually happens when the element and or the temperature sensor within fails replace the element sensor assembly and this should fix it, however also check first that the Triac is OK on the main board inside.

I had the same problem with mine. Try pushing or twisting the cord entering the soldering iron pencil. The temperature sensor can become disconnected if the cord gets twisted.

The solder station (power unit) is turning itself off randomly

I have heard that some of these had a failure on the regulator circuit that was packaged on a ceramic substrate with the control pot. Not sure if yours is this type.

Iron is not heating up hot enough stained glass soldering iron:

hi friend,
check this out
Consider the wattage of the soldering iron. A good soldering iron will have wattage of 80 to 150. A wattage of lower than 80 is not ideal for stained glass. You need a soldering iron that will melt the solder fast enough for your project. Consider the type of temperature control you want. Some irons will have a temperature control built in the tip. When the temperature drops, it will turn on and when the temperature is reached, it will turn off. Other soldering irons have a built-in rheostat. You control the temperature by turning the dial up or down. A separate rheostat can be purchased to plug your soldiering iron into. Rheostats are highly recommended. This lets you match your temperature to your soldering style and allow you to do decorative effects.
  • Step 2 Consider the heating element. There are two types of elements, ceramic or wire-wrapped. Ceramic core irons maintain heat more efficiently than wound wire heaters. In a ceramic core, the heater core extends into the tip for faster heat transfer. This will keep the tip hot for a longer period so you can work quickly and faster. Ceramic irons maintain their temperature longer and heat up within 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Step 3 Consider the weight of the soldering iron. You want a soldering iron that is lightweight and balanced. You will have less fatigue when using a lightweight soldering iron at long stretches of time. Check to see if it fits your hand comfortably. Check to see if it has a good rubber cushion for your hand.
  • Step 4 Check for the ease of changing tips on your soldering iron. When soldering stained glass, you want to match your tip to the technique you want to use. There are a variety of tips on the market for soldering irons, and you want to be able to change them easily.
  • Step 5 Check the soldering iron to see if it has a heavy-duty cord and a three-prong plug. You want a grounded three-prong plug to prevent the possibility of shock.
  • hope this helps u
