Question about Sony DRU-800A DVD±RW Dual Layer Burner

2 Answers

For about a year I've had a sony DVD-RW DRU-800A drive, running on an HP Pavilion 735A with Windows XP. It will no longer write. The Microsoft troubleshooter for DVD issues says, "The device is not capable of burning" (or writing.) This was not originally the case and I have not played with the hardware at all. Please advise.

It seems the problem may be both simpler and more complicated than I thought.

I just used the drive to write a CD successfully--so that part, at least, works.

What is the easiest way to test whether it will write a DVD? It may be that something is simply fooling the ms-software, which still claims that it's incapable of writing.

I look forward to hearing from you.

There could be a problem with the hardware or the drivers. The first thing I would try is to go into the control panel. Then go into the device manager and remove the dvd-rom device. Then re-boot the computer. Windows should locate the detect the drive and re-install the drivers. Now hopefully that will bring the burning capability back to operation again. If it does the same thing then try downloading the firmware from this link http://sony.storagesupport.com/product/119#drivers

Then run the download. This will update the dvd drive's firmware and might get the drive working again. Make sure to download the PDF instructions and read them before updating the firmware. They also have a drive diagnostic program you can download & updates for NERO. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi.

If the device is not capable of burning, then the problem is either the lens, or the device that supplies power to the laser.

This kind of fault may happen.

If the unit is less than one year old, contact Sony and have it replaced under limited warranty terms.

If unit is older than one year you may point out that you did not do any improper use of the device, and that the device may have failed because of a factory defect. They may offer you to replace the drive for free.

See Sony Global - "Contact Us"
Regards.

Can not finalize disk (cd or dvd)

I just burned 6 movies, I noticed that when it goes to finalize, it ejects before finalization is complete. I use FAB Platinum 4.1. I'm going to go into the settings and use Nero burning rom before I remove my Sony and put in my other burner (Plextor) better then Sony I think. I used Nero before and it helped, maybe it will help this time. Why 3 movies did not play, and the others did is beyond me. Dan J
