DLP RCA HDTV is displaying bars from top to bottom of screen, with green tint. Is this the light engine going bad?

Hi - this is a RCA Scenium HDLP61W151, and most recently (and warranty is still in effect) we had the light engine replaced. I'm considering if I should ship the light engine back to the vendor for replacement/repair, or should I attempt repair on another component of this unit. I am using a HDMI cable converted to a DVI input of this set. Both my satellite receiver & DVD player are connected to an out-board HDMI switching device as the TV only has one DVI input.

  • Dick Stubblebine Nov 15, 2009

The Light Engine is 5 "months old", and when it was replaced the DLP Lamp was not, as it was still operational.

  • Dick Stubblebine Nov 15, 2009

When the HDMI switch is set to DVD, and a disc is playing there still are bars displayed. I might add that these bars are very faint (and are when playing a TV show) too.

Thanks for your reply, i am going to send the Engine back for repair. I'll reply back to this upon receiving another engine for this unit. Again, thanks!

Hi - I have dis-assembled the light engine from the TV, and it is in transit back to the vendor for replacement/repair. However, upon working on this unit, and having a bright light in the rear of the TV, I looked inside the projection hole with my light, and I discovered that immediately inside there is a mirror. That mirror is covered with a thick layer of dust. How can I clean the dust from inside this unit (screen) while I am waiting for the electronics to be returned? Can you assist me in this endeavor?

  • Dick Stubblebine Nov 17, 2009

Hi - the "hole" where the light engine was removed from, thus giving me a "look see at" is like 2.5 inches across, and it appears from the exterior (through that hole) that the mirror I'm referring to is like 8 to 10 inches inside. Are you saying I get a can of clean air, with one of those red tube inserts on it, and blow into that entry in an attept to remove the dust from that mirror? One has to wonder, as the unit is sealed, how in the world did dust get inside of this unit?

  • Dick Stubblebine Nov 17, 2009

Thanks for your submission and your thoughts on the Light Engine. In reading my comments, previous, you will read that I have already sent the unit to a repair center. My concerns now are, how to clean the dust out of the inside of the display, and the mirror used to reflect the video on to the 61 inch screen.

  • Dick Stubblebine Nov 18, 2009

The "Light Engine" has been returned to the vendor for repair. When visually looking into the hole where the light engine will be reinstalled, I can see a layer of dust inside on the mirror where the Light Engine beams the video picture. While the Light Engine is gone, I was wondering what could be done to clean that mirror, thus a brighter/sharper picture will be had upon installing the Light Engine back into the TV.

  • Dick Stubblebine Nov 26, 2009

The Light Engine has been recalibrated by the supplying vendor, and it is now installed back into the TV with the existing Light which was used previously (as it still is beaming a brilliant beam). Upon viewing the picture, I am still seeing (on a black & white picture) a greenish tint. When there is a color picture, I am still seeing the greenish tint, as well as vertical color bars (soft color bars - not very bright). What can the problem be now?

  • Dick Stubblebine Nov 27, 2009

Have received the light engine back, and there still is a green tint, as well as color bars running top to bottom of screen, plese give me more suggestions, thanks!

Dust going in the inner layer of screen is very rare as due to dust in the screen and on mirror the screen becomes black or picture looks blurry/dim.but if the picture is only having green tint on the screen then its due to weak or bad light engine.so the light engine has to be replaced.also if the bulb in the tv is not properly fixed or moved from its position or fitted loose the problem may occur.but first light has to be replaced and checked if still the same problem remove and reset the bulb again then check out this will help.as you have already sent the light engine for replacement so get it checked with new replacement light engine.mostly this will solve the issue.
This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya

Yes this would be the color wheel or the engine itself in default you will need to have this fixed by a authorized repair center at this point, please do not use a back yard technician you might be throwing parts at the wrong issue doing so. Check this into a authorized shop you be glad you did so.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. This issue can happen due to a faulty light engine or due to a a faulty DLP Lamp. However, it can be an issue with the video driver card of your Card. I'll suggest to use a DVD player and check if the tint is still there. If the tint disappears then its an issue with the video driver card.
However, if it doesn't correct the issue its either a DLP Lamp or a faulty light engine.
Note-- Please make sure to turn off and unplug the TV for at least 1 hour (this will drain off current from all components especially capacitors) before you perform any repairs. Also note that the TV consists of very high voltages even when it is in OFF condition.

Before performing any repairs i'll suggest you to try and reset the TV by unplugging it for 8-10 hours.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

    Hi

The converter you are using may cause the issue you are facing. Try using a different cable or a different converter. It happens usually due to faulty light engine and rarely due to DLP Lamp. However, you can't be sure unless you check them using a CRO (Oscilloscope). As the engine is still under warranty you can get it replaced, if found faulty.

If the whole TV is under warranty i'll suggest you to call RCA people to get it checked whether it is the engine or Lamp.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

    Thanks

    Hi

    Thanks for using FixYa. Usually
this should not be done at home as it requires a professional expertise. However,
if you don’t want to spent an extra money on this, then you can use a very
delicate air blower from at least 1-1-1/2’ away. The mirror is adjustable and
if its position is changed even by 1 mm then the whole system would need to be
adjusted again. If you get it done by taking it to the repair tech, he will
charge about $30-40 and if you call him at home then he will charge $60-70.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or
    else revert for further assistance.

    Thanks

    Rylee

My screen has a green tint that will not adjust out ?????

The light engine on this TV uses a 3 lens DLP system. You probably have a section of the DLP engine that is dirty or going bad. I have one that is overly yellow the way yours is green. I tried to clean it out, that helped but did not cure the problem. The actual DLP lenses are nearly impossible to get to. That is a good thing because they are very fragile, too! It is watchable but not perfect. Life is hard... with the age of these TV's watch classified ads or Craigslist. Sometimes you can find them for a very low price or even free! They are very easy to work on and really a pretty good tv with working correctly.

My RCA 55 inch DLP HDTV needs the color fixed. It keeps showing purple and green on the screen

color wheel is getting ready to fail which is causing the color wheel to spin slower which cause the index speed to be off so the tints will be messed up.

Converge off a little and screen has green tint

If you have the remote, go to the setup screen and move the picture. Converge has nothing to do with where the picture sits but, where the red, blue & green dots land. All you should see are pure white dots. There should be absolutely NO color ghost anywhere on the screen. If so, you need a bar / dot generator to set the convergence to center the dots.

You have a convergence problem. Components are shorted out and must be replaced. Unless you're a technician, there's really nothing you can do at this point.

Toshiba 56HM195 56 in HD DLP Loud Buzzing and color distortion

If the sound, sounds more like a Hum with some vibration chances are the Cooling fan located behind the lamp is going bad, about $20 to repair, if its a high pitch hum most likely the Color Wheel and if thats the case about $30.
Good luck, my fan just went bad now seeing green dots everywhere, so debating on just junking it out or fixing it, with winter coming on might just breakdown and buy LCD and say the heck with DLP from now on.
Good luck to you..

Light engine issue I would say, is it somewhat transparrent? if totally black might be something else but more than likely will be a light path issue inside the light engine.
