The speed of a USB port is predetermined by the factory it came out of, and there is no way to bring up the speed.
If you want USB2, you'll have to consider buying a new laptop with USB2 already on it, considering the costs of actually replacing the port to run for USB2.

Recently, when I insert a USB flash drive into my laptop's USB port, I get the message: This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a HI-SPEED USB 2.0 port.

Your laptop has USB1 port and the USB 2 message will appear if you plug an USB 2 device into this USB port.
You maybe able to upgrade the USB port to USB 2 if there is a BIOS upgrade available from the laptop manufacturer's WEB site.
If not you maybe able to get an USB 2 PCMCIA card to install into the PCMCAI slot on your laptop.

ITunes download

The memory stick wouldn't change the ability to download with iTunes. You'd want to make sure you don't have a firewall blocking your iTunes internet access.
