Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Don't want to get your hopes up too high, but here are some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

No image is captured by the screen itself (LCD screen works but completely dark).

Did you try pressing the display button several times? in both viewing mode and record mode? Cycle through all display modes, s you get used to the button, so it does not trow you off when it happens again.

Lens error restart camera

One of the gears in the lens zoom assembly is probably broken. This usually happens if the camera gets bumped when the lens is extended or if the camera gets turned on when it is inside a camera bag or purse.

My new Canon SX100IS is having "Lens error, Restart Camera" error

It seems the lens assembly has an internal problem and needs to be repaired.

The lens replacement requires a qualified camera repair technician, unless you want to try in repair it yourself, which requires tools (scredrivers, soldering iron, desoldering tool, magnifier glass with light, etc).

The reason of it it may be a spring or a metal post located in the focus sub-assembly, but the only way to confirm it is opening the camera and the lens assembly.
