Hi.

Unless you have a Bang&Oluffsen TV, pushing the key SYSTEM on the Bose remote control may not be enough to display the menu on display.

If I do not remember wrong, on the last Bose 38 that I configured on a Samsung LCD, you had to ensure that there is proper video connection to DVD, and set the Input source selector to DVD on Bose.
On TV you must set the source to the input connected to the Bose (AV or Component, unless this unit is not connected directly to TV but passing through a different device, like a cable box or a DVD.

Ensure that you have video connection (you may have connected audio only).
Ensure that TV is tuned on same input connected to Bose.
Test with Bose connected to DVD.

Regards.

The volume control on my Bose 38 lifestyle system will not adjust the system, with either the remote or the volume controls on on the console.

On a Bose 38, the volume will self adjust at start, and then you will be able to change volume using either radio remote, or buttons on main unit (the one with DVD).

If the unit is not responding , then there is a fault.

A fault where the Bose 38 is working (eg. you can swap from DVD to AUX on bose), but you cannot control volume (you do not see the values on main unit display) is rather unusual.

Ensure that you have correctly connected TV, receiver, or any other external device to the bose in Input, not in output from Bose.
If you have an HDTV, use the optical input on Bose, that is the only digital audio in on a Bose 38.

Check if the problem depends on connections, if it does not, let me know.

We want to hook up an HDMI dvd player to the tv and have the sound come thru the Bose Lifestyle 38 (older model, did not come w/the HDMI converter that the 48 has or newer systems come with). We are not...

The best way to do this is to take your OPTICAL AUDIO OUT from your TV - (if it's a newer TV) - plug it in to the OPTICAL AUDIO IN on your BOSE system, then use the 'TV' source on your Lifestyle 38 to get the sound from. I have sound for X-Box, DVD player, Blue-Ray Player and Wii being pushed through the TV back to the BOSE and it sounds great. I don't have to change the source on the BOSE very much either - except when I listen to stored music!

What button on Bose remote will erase material on cable box DVR?

Try 'Enter' if you haven't already. A yes/no question on a cable box is usually a toggle, so select yes and press Enter. If that doesn't work, try a different code from the system menu. (Press 'System' and go to 'remote control.')
