Question about Dell Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a dell dimension 2400 with XP Home. I haven't used it for some time and I updated all my apps and Windows. Then updated the drivers but the only ones that worked were the Intel universal host controller 24. I have no sound and had soundmax audio on it before. I went to cnet to update to SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio 5.12.02.5280 it instructed me to uninstall it first,so I did, then upon re-intalling it I got a message that it wasn't compatible with my hardware. I later read this in the Cnet review for this download link: (Cons: Cnet should not have advised software update. Instructions read to first remove existing drivers. New drivers would not install ''audio driver files do not suport your computer hardware.'' Had to re-install from the original Intel motherboard CD.) So I am not the only one who had the same problem. So I decided to try Real Tek Audio AC97 Codec and it shut down my pc and I had to restart in safemode and then I removed it in add/remove. So I assume it is not compatible with my dell dimension 2400? When it shut down it went to a blue screen that said to check to see if video adapter needed to be changed or BIOS updated but to check with vendor??? Then when I rebooted in Safe Mode, the found new hardware box came up with multimedia controller found but when I tried to install it did not find software. There are 2 big yellow question marks under other devices in the device manager. One says multimedia controller and the other says ethernet controller. The only audio drivers I could find on Dell site for Dell Dimension 2400 is ADI 198x Integrated Audio,Creative Labs-patch/upgrade Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Digital and Soundblaster Live 24 bit. Is the ADI 198x Integrated Audio the multimedia controller and the one I need? If not can you please tell me what one I need and what ethernet controller I need. I tried updating the Realtek RT2 8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC driver in the device list but it only said it could not find a better one yet when I did a scan for drivers needed it said this needed to be updated. Thank You Sherry 15 nov 2009

Ok, instead of having all the hassle, my best advise for you is this, have your hard drive reformat, install it first with windows xp SP1 then upgrade it to windows xp SP2, in this way all the drivers missing and not supported will be rsetored, windows xp supported almost all drivers

Dell dimension 2400 network adapter driver

The Dell Dimension 2400 drivers are available here: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/product/dimension-2400 . Use another computer to visit the site and make sure that Microsoft XP shows in the OS search drop down. Expand the section labeled Network. The wired network adapter is a Broadcom 4401. The direct link to the latest driver (V. 3.63 released 8/5/2003) page is http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/dimension-2400?driverId=R64645&osCode=WW1&fileId=2731129724&languageCode=en&categoryId=NI .

A more recent driver for XP is available from Broadcom at: http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/4401.php . Select the driver for the 32-bit version for XP.

I hope this helps.

Dell freezes up after reformat.

i recommend loading in safe mode and uninstalling your graphics drivers and installing the drivers from support.dell.com the reason i say this is because the graphics drivers windows wants to use via windows update occasionally will call erratic system behavior. you can also load in safe mode and go to start>accessories>administrative tools> event viewer. or simply press the windows key and the r key at the same time and type eventvwr and press enter. once there go through the logs and look for red X's or exclamations (can't remember which off hand) and see if you can find out what happens when it crashes.

Reinstalled Windows XP on an old computer (DELL Dimension 2400) and the monitor won't display above basic resolution. Downloaded and reinstalled the monitor driver and still no good. Opened up START

According to the Dell Support web site the Dell Dimension 2400 has a built in Intel 3D extreme graphics adapter, assuming you are using this and not a PCI graphics card.

Go to the Intel Download Centre and run their Intel Driver Update Utility which will automatically scan your system for updated drivers for any installed or integrated Intel devices.

If the Intel Utility identifies an updated driver for your graphics adapter then download and install that which should enable you to configure a higher resolution for your display.

My Dell Dimension 2400 has stopped working - how do i restore the factory settings ?

Hello,

It appears your model Dell 2400 should have been supplied with the CD's for reinstalling Windows XP, CD will be green or blue in color and the drivers and applications that came with the computer.

If so, back up your files first to an external drive and then put the CD in the CD drive and reboot the computer. It should come up to reinstall XP.

If good to go, you will be prompted to install the second Cd as well as online XP updates.
Software that was installed after you bought the computer also wouyld have to be reinstall as well as restoring your backed up file.

Rememberm all data is lost when you reinstall your operating system, unless these is a choice on install that may ask for destructive, or non-destrutive (keeps files).

I am attaching a link to Dell for your to copy and paste into your web browser for the support page for drivers and user guide in the event you need to reveiw the process.

I have a dell dimesion 2300. I Just bought a dell dimesion 2400 on amazon.com it has windows xp on it and it came with no disk. can I install my dell 2300 windows xp operation cd on the 2400 if I ever need...

Generally, yes, if it's the same version, (e.g., "Home Edition, or "Professional", etc. Then the Operating System disk should get you going well enough to start all the necessary updates You may need to go to Dell and download the model specific driver files, updates, etc. to get everything !00%
Make sure you have the right Microsoft Product key for the installation.
Best thing you can do is back up your system and keep it somewhere separate, with all this info. There are many good free utilities for system specs., such as Belarc Advisor. It's easier to fix a broken system when you can automatically put everything right from backups, where ever possible. You are thinking ahead, instead of after a disaster!
Good luck.!
