Monitor on Acer staying gray

I have an Acer Aspire 3000 Laptop and the monitor is staying gray, you can hear that it is running windows in the back ground but no picture. I have tried to hook it to another monitor, the other monitor will show Windows XP screen, but when it goes to load the os it goes back to the monitor on the laptop. Do you have any suggestions on what could be happening.

Re: Monitor on Acer staying gray

Have you tried to the "function+8" (or the number to transfer the signal to a monitor) when you are on the laptop with grey screen?
Did you said that grey, means that there is light on the laptop, but no colors, or that tha screen is not turned on?

If you can obtain a desktop monitor used for PCs, plug it into the side port on the laptop. Start up the system and see if it runs OK on the external monitor. If so, the problem is with the LCD display on the laptop.

Acer Aspire 9800 has black screen on startup

Check that you do not have the laptop setup for external monitor only. Using the FN key look for a function key that has a picture of a monitor and press this key in combination with the FN key.

ok, press the Power button on the Laptop once, and if nothing happens, press the power button again but this time hold it down until it goes off... then remove the battery for 2 minutes, after that put the battery back and press the power button, it should power on and the monitor will show. (Do not plug into power source during all the above process).

Can't get the PC to display on a TV through the RS-232 interface.

You can not connect a monitor to an RS-232. If your video card does not have a monitor output, you cannot connect a tv monitor to your computer... and the fact that it only shows the original monitor on the drop down menu tells me you can't add a TV to your system

Toggle Between Laptop and Monitor

Fn + F5 toggles the display output, the trick here to wait each time you hit this combination because it goes through several options. Hit it once and it may want to go to just the external, then both the laptop screen and the external. etc. Now Fn + F6 turns the backlight bulb off on the internal monitor to save energy. Now I am giving up the link to your service manual, it is in PDF format so you can make a copy for yourself and keep on the laptop, print it or save it to a flash so you can reference it later. I believe if you take the keyboard off and disconnect the video lead on the left side where the display plugs into the motherboard, then when you power the laptop back up it will default to the external cord and you can use the laptop without any switching. That is what I am doing with an Aspire 5920 that I am rebuilding. Good luck, ParrotHead PC Repair

Hello dj50551,
This may help.
Give this a try.
Turn the computer completely off, hook up the external monitor, and reboot. After bootup(and still not seeing the other monitor) right click in the middle of your LAPTOP screen, select Properties, this will bring up the Display Properties window. Go to the Settings tab(far right). Please ensure that there are two monitors that appear. You should see a number 1 and number 2. Click on #1, this is your laptop screen, and ensure that there are tick marks next to:
Use this Device as the primary monitor. And Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor.

Then Click on #2 and ensure that there IS NOT a tick mark in the first box but that there IS one in the second.
Please reply if you require further assistance. It may be that that monitor is not compatible with your laptop. I would also suggest that you visit the manufacturers site of the laptop ond make sure you have all the latest video and chipset drivers.

Have you tried to disconnect the external monitor and just booting to the laptop? If this works, then use the "e" key next to the power button to add the second monitor.
