Ok. There is good news and bad news. Good news it your passport is under warranty. Bad news is it sounds like you have a mechanical failure in the drive. There are programs available for sale that can attempt to get all your data back but depending on the amount of data it could take days for the program to dump the problem drive to another hard drive. Also all the file names will be changed. There are several programs available most of them all start at 99$ and work about the same including Prosoft’s Data Rescue PC ($99), as well as Ontrack EasyRecovery DataRecovery ($199). Most times if its important data you would want a professional to recover the data and this could cost anywhere from 500-2500$. This is why I always STRESS as much as I can you have to back up all important data. DVD-R's are very cheap and most important data does not take up a lot of space.
http://support.wdc.com/warranty/index_end.asp?lang=en
if you visit that link you can request a replacement drive under warranty. They also have data recovery affiliates that work with western digital and them recovering your data won't void your warranty. As i previously mentioned there is no way to repair a hard drive yourself. This takes a lot of expertise and can ONLY be done by a professional. You can try the software if your OS is recognizing your drive and you can check out one of the software programs I have mentioned. Those are your available options if you need any other assistance please let me know.
Thank you,
lee

How to install it on Mac

p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; }

Thanks for your email. The Western Digital WD Passport comes formatted for a PC, so it does require that you format the drive so that the Mac can recognize it. First, open Disk Utility with the drive connected and running. Then, choose the drive on the left side, then choose the Partition Tab. Change the Current Partition to one, or the number of partitions you would like, then click Options. Here you will change the Partition Map Scheme to GUID, then click OK. Then in the Format Menu drop down choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click Apply and OK. Your drive will now be formatted for a Mac. To format the drive for cross-platform use, make sure that you have backed up all your data from the drive as formatting will destroy any data on the drive. First, connect the drive to your Mac, and open Disk Utility. Then select your drive on the left side of the window and choose the Partition Tab. Then change the Current Partition drop-down menu to 1 partition and click on the Options button. A new window will appear where you will choose Master Boot Record (MBR), then click OK. Then choose Free Space from the Format drop-down menu, click Apply, then OK. Your drive will now appear unformatted. Then choose the Erase tab, choose FAT32 as the Format, name your drive (you will be limited to 11 characters), and click Erase, then OK. Your drive will then appear on the desktop formatted for cross-platform use, and you can copy the data you need to move to your PC and then connect the drive to your PC. If formatting is not an option, the you can buy a program such as MacDrive that will allow your PC to read and write Mac OS files.

Hard drives do not like being dropped, especially when it was in operation. This hard drive is faulty and it is not repairable.
There are data recovery companies that specializes in recovering data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.
I suggest you Google search for these companies and get a quote before you proceed.

I had the same issue. Its not a power issue because it shows up in device manager. Heres what I did.

Right-click on my computer and click Manage>Disk Management

Your drive should show up there. Right-click on it. If explore is not grayed out, assign a drive letter to it and you should then be bale to see it in my computer.

In my case explore was grayed out. I had to click on the option to format the drive. After re-formatting the passport explore was available. I then assigned a drive letter to it and I have access again.

I guess somehow using it on multiple computers srcewed up the file-system on it. I was using it between windows and linux.

This fixed my problem.

I have the 80GB WD passport and it suddenly stopped working one day.  The unit lights up but nothing else.  Finally I cracked the case open and found, as I suspected, that the drive is simply a SATA laptop drive with a SATA-to-USB conversion card built in.  I suspected that the card was **** so I disconnected it and used a USB hard drive adapter (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=3770&name=USB_Hard_Drive_Adapter) and I can read/write to the drive just fine.  Best part is that the adapter I use has its own power supply so I'm not pulling juice through the USB cable for a SATA drive.
Even though mine "works" again I don't recommend these drives to anyone.  They're just not sturdy enough or well designed.

Icon disappeared from desktop on my mac

By stating the System Profiler environment, I asume you're a Macintosh user. Try going into your DISK UTILITIES folder. Appllications/Utilities/Disk Utility And when/if the drive appears in the the pane on the left, select it and hit the MOUNT button at the top of the window. If the drive fails to mount, you may need data recovery software or services. Usually when a drive enclosure box has a flickering led, it's usually to see the drive activity as far as reading or writing to the drive. The drive may be struggling to mount or there are bad blocks or sectors on the drive. Hope this helps.
