I am assuming this is a direct drive washer you are talking about. If the motor coupler is bad, it is either going to be broke in pieces, or, the centers that fit on the motor shaft and the transmission shaft will be "rounded" out. The center should be the same shape as the motor and transmission shaft and fit tight. If it is rounded and has play in it when on the shaft, it needs replaced. Older couplers where plastic in the centers, the replacment and newer couplers have a metal insert on the centers to prevent them from rounding out. If the coupler is your problem, it will not spin or aggitate, but you will hear the motor running. The machine WILL still drain with a bad coupler. If it wont spin OR drain, you probably have a bad lid switch.

Drum not spinning or draining. Making a sound like something is trying to run but cant.

Check the power. If your Kenmore washing machine does not operate at all, you may need to replace defective or blown fuses or reset a tripped circuit breaker. This is done by moving the lever to the "Off" position and back to "On."
  • Examine the lid switch to see if it is defective. A malfunctioning switch can prevent the machine from operating or spinning. The switch can be found on the inside close to the door frame. Some models also have a special "lid-switch" fuse close by the lid switch within the control panel. A blown fuse will not allow the washer to fill with water.
  • Unclog the drain line if the machine is spinning but not pumping out water. If the problem still isn't fixed, the pump may need replacing.
  • Look for a broken pump belt or frozen water pump pulley if the machine does not spin or pump water. Test the pulley by disengaging it from the appliance and physically turning it. It should rotate freely.
  • Determine if the motor coupler or belts are broken, which could prevent the washer from spinning. Failure to spin also could be the result of a worn clutch, a malfunctioning drive motor, an improperly shifting transmission or a worn or "seized" spin bearing or basket drive. These problems also could keep a washing machine from agitating.
  • Find the source of a leak by checking the washer's air gap, inlet spout and rubber tube. Replace any items that are cracked, worn, deformed or disengaged.
  • Test the motor coupler, water-inlet valves and the drain hoses if your clothes are wet following the spin cycle. Replace these parts as needed.

  • Hope this might help u out!

MODEL W 201 TURNTABLE DOES NOT ROTATE

If the oven is still heating, but the carousel isn't turning, this problem is commonly attributed to a turntable motor that has worn out and may need to be replaced. The motor is attached to the center plastic piece (called a turntable shaft, turntable ring or coupler) under the middle of the glass tray. The following link explains how to access and replace the motor:

    http://www.fixya.com/support/r3555716-replacing_a_turntable_motor_on_a_microwa

This is a very simple repair, that usually is not expensive. The price range will be determined by the model and manufacturer. This repair can also be performed on an over the range model microwave oven WITHOUT uninstalling it.

You can refer to any of the following websites for comparison:

    searspartsdirect.com
    pcappliancerepair.com
    appliancepartspros.com
    repairclinic.com

The first three sites listed have helpful exploded view diagrams to assist you with locating and properly identifying the part(s) you may need.

If the model number is correct, the part number for a replacement motor is 8183954. If the coupler is stripped and needs replaced, the part number is 8206228. The average price for a motor is about $45. The coupler is less than $10. If you have any questions, please post back with your complete MODEL NUMBER and let me know. I hope this helps you.

I have a Kenmore 70 series top loading washing machine and I can't find an access panel to check the belt and so forth. Earlier this afternoon I was washing a medium load of laundry and I was checking to...

If this is a Kenmore top loader it does not have have a drive belt. This washer uses a motor coupling in place of the belt. It is located between the drive motor and gearcase (transmission). This configuration is known as a "direct-drive" system.

It sounds like you may have a broken motor coupling. Failure to agitate or spin accompanied by the sound of the motor running with no tub action are some of the symptoms you can experience with this problem. Just to be sure...the following link explains the symptoms of a failed motor coupling and how to diagnose the problem:

If you determine the coupler to be defective, the next link explains how to access the coupler and replace it:

    http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574231-replacing_a_motor_coupling

The part number is included in the instructions I provided. Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following websites:

    searspartsdirect.com
    pcappliancerepair.com
    appliancepartspros.com
    repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three sites I listed also include helpful exploded view parts diagrams to assist you in locating and properly identifying the parts you need. If you do not wish to order parts on line, use the part numbers I provided and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. The coupler is commonly sold as part of their in-store inventory. The average cost of a motor coupling is about $15.

If you have any questions, please post back with your complete model number (located on a nameplate along the wash tub rim under the lid) and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Another cause of no agitation is a failed gearcase (transmission). A tale-tell sign of a gearcase failure is oil leakage under the washer. The motor coupling and lid switch are the cheaper options to begin with. I would recommend you verify them, first, before venturing into the possibility of a bad gearcase.

If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: The MODEL NUMBER is usually printed on a nameplate along the wash tub rim under the washer lid.

Will not Spin or Agitate. Whirlpool washer came

If the washer will fill and drain, but won't agitate or spin, you may have a broken motor coupling. The noise of the motor engaging, lack of agitation and ability to still drain are the usual symptoms. This is a common fail item with this model washer through normal wear and tear. Newer versions of the coupler are more resilient and resist breaking. The following link explains how to replace one:

    http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the transmission and takes the place of a drive belt. They do wear out and can break. The replacement part number is included in the link I provided and is an improved upgraded coupling that is more resilient. It should last longer. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

A replacement coupler can be purchased on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11. Just use the part number in the link and "Search by Part Number" for your search criteria.

Now...a washer that fills and doesn't do anything, or stops right after the wash cycle and then does not advance to the rinse cycle and drain is commonly caused by a lid switch malfunction. The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

    http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

If the switch requires replacement, a new one can be purchased on line at searspartsdirect.com, pcappliancerepair.com, repairclinic.com, appliancepartspros.com. Just use your model number as your search criteria. All these sites offer competitive pricing, so shop all them for the best price.

    Take note of your symptoms:

    1. Washer fills, may or may not agitate, will not advance to the rinse cycle, and will NOT drain - lid switch.

    2. Washer fills, does NOT agitate or spin, but WILL drain - motor coupling.

If you still have questions, please let me know. If the suggestions I have listed do not match your washer symptoms, please post back and elaborate more on what the washer is/is not doing. That way I can provide you with better assistance. I hope this information is helpful to you.

PS The age of the washer is determined by the Serial Number on the appliance. If you post back with the number I can tell you the year it was manufactured.

Whirlpool washer Ultimate Care II drains but doesn't spin. Loud grinding noise. Is it the coupler or the transmission? Or something else. The machine is probably a 2004. We bought new March 2005.

The coupler would be an easy assessment to consider. The following link explains how:

    http://www.fixya.com/support/r385252-replacing_motor_coupling_whirlpool_top

I posted the link that explains how to replace a coupler, because it also explains how to get to it. It is common for these couplers to break over time. Either, the plastic pieces break, or the rubber bushing shears apart. A common sign is to find black filings under the washer. Another common problem with earlier models, is the center hole in the coupler rounds out and begins to slip on the transmission or drive motor shaft. The manufacturer has come out with an improved coupler that has a steel grommet in the center. The part number is provided with the link. I hope this helps you. Let me know if you require further assistance.

NOTE: If it is determined that the coupler is NOT bad, the gearcase (transmission) would be your next logical choice. I can also explain how to replace one of these (if required). It's not a difficult job.

Nothing stuck in pump ... what is and where is the coupler

If you are talking about the motor coupler, it is located behind the drive motor. You will need to unplug the machine, remove the drain pump, disconnect the wire connectors to the drive motor, then remove the clips that hold the drive motor in place. The coupler consists of two plastic pieces with three prongs (one piece is on the drive motor, one on the transmission) with a rubber bushing in between. I don't know what your original problem is, so I hope this helps you at least find what you were looking for. Let me know if I can help any further.
