To get out of safe mode all you have to do is reboot the device, nothing else. The phone should be bale to work fine but without any third party applications.
If what you see on the display is just a bunch of letters, then you are in the recovery section. I'm not sure, but I think that once you highlight a line just tap the Home icon to activate. Make sure that "Reboot Device" is highlighted to reboot the phone in normal mode.
For this type of phone, the usual suspect is the flex cable. that is a fiber like cable that links the upper and lower parts of your phone and when it develops cracks, display goes off and upper buttons may stop responding. check it here.
The volume buttons on the side of the phone are sticking. My up volume button seemed fine, but someone told me to keep pushing it and the button will release. Sure enough, the volume controls started to work. I played with both the up and down buttons some more and the button below started working. A few more minutes monkeying around with the volume buttons and now all the buttons work.
