Question about Dell Inspiron 1100 Notebook
I think I've got it (famous last words) but you aren't going to like it. I'm running linux and that has it's own issues with keeping the GUI working but I noticed the 1100 also locks up in Windows. Latest BIOS. Tried the fresh heat sink paste, cleaned the fins, even running a CPU low-impact GUI called Xfce. Fan control is good. Still froze. Now I've gone several boots and hours without a freeze. How? Remove the Flash player. Told you you wouldn't like it. I've been running the (linux) Epiphany browser and haven't had a freeze since. I think the people who speculate that the on-board video has a design flaw or overheats are on the right track.

Check to see if your laptops overheating. Check to see if the fan/heatsink assembly is clogged..
Run chkdsk /r from your command prompt, let it reboot to run..
