Thanks for the response. Here is some additional information about the problem. Both fans are working, but the compressor is very hot. I have noticed that the overload relay/cap occasionally makes a clicking sound and then the compressor makes a whining sound. Anyway, I have unplugged the unit and will let it rest for a couple of hours while checking the drain.

Thanks for the help. I checked the freezer compartment behind the panels and the coils and drain pan are clean. When looking at the parts list I cannot find anything labeled defrost timer. Could it be labeled something else.

    Thanks

  • billhoggatt Nov 15, 2009

I can find a part labeled (Board, adaptive Defrost). It is a circuit board located in the section where Freezer temp and refrigerator damper are located. My guess is this is going to be it / just wondering what you think.

  • billhoggatt Nov 15, 2009

Yes, I believe the defrost is on. Not exactly sure how to tell for certain if it is on. The fridge is a little over 5yrs old. I will pick up this part locally tomorrow and let you know for sure.

    Thanks

The defrost timer could be stuck ,but removing the inner panels of the freezer compartment needs to be done, and see if the coil in the rear is iced over, and below it,if so,the drain below the coils,is stopped up with ice and food debris.Defrost the drain with hot water, and clear the drain, the drain runs down under the fridge into a drip pan.It will be messy, but it will fix the problem. When the drain stopped up with the food debris, the water, from the defrost cycle, stood in the drain, and backed up,and continued freezing, the fan,in the freezer compartment could not move the cold air, therefore the area was lowered in temp,Check this first, and if it seems ok,then replace the defrost timer, most likely under the fridge unit.

    It will have a small dial,about 5/16 or 1/4 diameter dial,looks like a stub sticking out,this dial,can be turned,manualy,by hand,it is somewhere under,or behind the unit.

Hi,

The problem is in the defrost system..

You have a defrost heater in your freezer that comes on 3 times a day & melts the frost to keep your freezer frost free. That frost turns to water & runs down a drain & eventually goes to a drain pan located under the unit. On these models the hole for the drain is located directly under the evaparator fan.

The drain hole is to far from the heater so the water settles & then freezes around the fan blades causing it to stop spinning. There are two fans so you have to check , you said fan is running, may i know the fan you specified is it a compressor fan or evaporator fan

There are two fan, Evaporator fans job to circulate cold air from the freezer to the fridge, This fan should work
Compressor fan should have stopped leading to increase in the compressor temperature and stopping the compressor performing its action, due to which you dont get a cold freezer...
You can notice the compressor running very hot due to this action...

A fix would be to unplug and leave for sometime. When you get the ice gone from around the fan you should be able to see the drain hole & be sure water runs freely down the hole. Put it back together then adjust the front legs of the fridge so the whole unit slopes back slightly causing the water to run back to that drain hole without settling.

Please leave me comment, if you need further assistance
Thanks for using FixYa!

You can check the voltage going to the fan if it is present while pressing the freezer door switch. It should be 120 volts ac.

If there is voltage, you can bring down the fan and hook up some wires to the fan and directly plug it to 120 volts outlet and observe if it will run.

If it will not run, replace the fan. If it will run slowly, lubricate the fan until it will run fast.

If it is running good and there is no voltage present when you do the first test, then check the door switch for switching contacts.

It could be a normally close and open contacts

Fridge warm, freezer has frost on back panel & is defrosting, fans work, just changed defrost thermostat, no air is moving from freezer side to fridge side, drain pan under fridge is dry

this fan needs to run when the compressor runs, check fan blade for being jammed by ice if you have this much ice on back wall as ice will stall motor,if no fan there will be no cool air to refrige compartment also the defrost drain tray will fill with water then freeze over which in turn floods the freezer floor and refrige compartments cause it cannot drain to the pan in the bottom

My kenmore side by side is working the freezer the fridge is not to goood running warm

Sounds like you have a defrost problem which is evident by your description.
Try putting freezer into defrost and see what happens.

To initiate a defrost cycle, open the door and push the light switch in and out 5 times within 6 seconds. The compressor and fans should shut off and the defrost heater should come on. Open the door and push the light switch in and out 5 times within 6 seconds to remove the refrigerator from the defrost mode and back into a cooling mode.

Fridge not cooling or freezing

Hi,
You can start with replacing the start capacitor and relay to see if the compressor will run again, but you have about a 50 -50 chance that the compressor has gone bad and will need to be replaced....

Freezer is all deforsted. Fridge is 5 years old. We smelled a burning smell 2 nights ago and now everything is defrosted. We couldnt tell where the smell was coming from in our house. Motor is running....

If the evaporator (freezer) fan and the condensor (bottom rear) fan are both running but you have no cooling at all, the odor you smelled was probably the compressor start relay/overload device. It would be in your best interest to have a professional service technician look at it. Proper repair could mean the difference between a $60 part, or a $300 compressor. Prices are for the part only.

Better solution is to replace the defrost element, defrost timer,or defrost thermostat, one of these are not working and when replaced will fix the problem.

Model 106.53632300 couple of days ago smelled something (burned electrical type smell). Now both fridge and freezer not cooling. Cooling fan in back on bottom is running.

you may have a fried start or run cap and hopefully not a spendy board like everything runs on these days....bad caps(capacitors) will cause compressor not to start and run but arent needed for fans to kick on ....

Freezer freezes but fridge does not get cool

DO u have frost build up in the freezer ? If so you have a defrost problem.. defrost thermostat, timmer or heaters. You can by-pass the thermostat cut it and tape the wire together and put it into defrost with the timmer by clicking it to the right until it clicks the heater you need to ohm out .. the defrost timmer will be good most of the time if it comes out of defrost ... ref. will start running again when u test the defrost thermostat here is a diagram that may help
