Question about Computers & Internet

My wireless is not working. I have a Compaq laptop for which the W-lan icon is not showing up in the side tray nor is the light turning blue. When I am connecting the machine thru Ethernet from the same wireless router the internet works. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the driver.

Compaq Presario F730US note book PC. The wlan on off switch is in the front and in On position-->

  • abhishek21 Nov 15, 2009

    Hi there,
I have already tried a bunch of different things-
installing and uninstalling the driver, rebooting the computer turning the switch on and off.
the issue seems to be in the wireless assistant...I am not able to open it or set up the connection automatically. It works fine if I use an Ethernet cable from the same router.

Do you see what the issue is/ It is a Compaq Presario F730US Notebook PC...
I want to know as to how to get the wireless assistant work...

Hello and thank you for using Fixya's services.

It sounds like the hardware is damaged. It is either the button (that slides left to right) or the actual card for the wireless which is integrated to motherboard.

In order to check both of these, the laptop will have to be opened up and you will need to take a look inside. This can be a difficutl process but if you are a DIY type person, you can find the specs on the manufacturer's website.

Instead of replacing this or having to open the computer, I would recommend purchasing a Linksys wireless adaptor. You can find them at any electronics store for less than $50.00 and sure beats the frusturation of having to put the laptop together. There are two different types. USB adaptor or Card adaptor. (see pictures)

This will give you time to look around and find a computer tech that will not charge too much.

I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any questions.

If the wireless assistant isn't showing any networks in range and you are positive there is no modem or router issues, then the hardware is faulty, which is why it will not show a "broadcasting signal." You can try tapping, gently on the slider that enables the wireless and see if maybe it is just loose. I have had some luck with that sometimes.

Make sure that you physically turned on the wireless connection on your laptop. This is done either by pressing the Fn key & another key marked with an antenna in the same color as the "Fn" on the Fn key, or by moving a small switch to the ON position. This small switch is usually located on the side of the laptop. You might need to refer to your laptop's user manual to locate that switch.
If you do not have your laptop's user manual, specify the model of your laptop & I could help you find it on the Internet.

A very good place to check for wireless connectivity problems for your exact laptop model:

    This is worth checking.

    Hi

I suspect the issue might be that the quick launch button software might not be installed, get it from herehttp://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softw...

I would also suggest that you re-install and download the driver for the wireless from the above link as well.

Then restart the machine, hopefully it will turn on once you enter windows the next time.

let me know if you need further assistance and sorry for the delayed response I was away.

I have internet connection but cannot access internet

Bluetooth connections allow devices to connect without the use of wires or cables.
Some users of the Sony Vaio laptop computer have encountered problems with the connection of Bluetooth devices with their computer.

The problem lies with turning on the Vaio's Bluetooth function.
This is turned on through the computer's Wireless Switch Settings manager.

The icon for this is in the system tray in the taskbar when the computer is first purchased.
Double-click the "Wireless Switch Settings" icon in the system tray of the taskbar.

It is a a blue-green icon with "LAN" in one corner and "B" in the other.
Check the "Enable Bluetooth Device" setting in the Bluetooth Device section.

Click "OK."

If the device was already enabled, change the wireless LAN from "2.4GHz" to "5GHz" because, as the warning message should say, using the 2.4GHz wireless LAN and the Bluetooth device can make the connection unstable.

Click the "Apply" button after the appropriate boxes are checked to activate the Bluetooth signal. A blue light should come on near the computer's on/off switch for the Wi-Fi radio.

Click "OK." Another dialog box should appear explaining that the Wireless Switch Settings icon should now be in the taskbar.

Use this icon if you need to turn off or on the Bluetooth device in the future.

My safe to remove icon has dissappeared how can re install it please

Which operating system ?????????

The system tray in Windows XP is the right side of the small blue bar at the bottom of the screen that houses the clock and a few other small icons. You can add icons to the system tray for ease of access, including the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon, which allows you to easily remove hardware from your computer.

Turn on the Windows XP computer and right-click the taskbar. Select "Properties" from the menu that appears. Check "Hide Inactive Icons", then select "Customize" A new window appears with all of the icons currently on the system tray, along with icons also for some programs that don't appear on the tray. Click next to the icon "Safely Remove Hardware," then check the box "Always Show". Click "Apply". Safely Remove Hardware Icon?

My dlink router dir-600 was purchased only last month. It was all working well until 3 days ago...the light in wireless icon and other LAN all stopped. Only power and Globe lights were Orange... no...

If you have ethernet cable, plug one end of cable into in available slot of router (LAN) and other end ont your laptop to see if you can get out Internet that way. If not, turn off you router, wait for a minute and turn it back on. If it works after the reboot, try wireless again to see if it works. Most of time, router just needs to be rebooted.
thanks

I can not find the wireless switch to turn on

It is a small icon on the bottom tray of Windows - just hoover over each one if you are not sure which one to select and it will say wirlesss conncections. You can also use the multi-function keys which have blue icons or text in conjunction with the "Fn" key - look for the one that has what appears like a radio wave symbol or something similar along the top row of your keyboard.

No internet connection

if you are worried about the icons that are sown in the tray system ( lower right in the task bar ) those are showing the other connections that are not working at the time ...for example the LAN cable conection ...and the blue tooth ..those will appear not connected if you have no cable on the Lan card or blue tooth device connection ...even if you are connected via wireless those will appear unless you choose to unchecked the show in tray ...
if you are asking about the connection you have made wireless and it doesnt work ...you probably have a driver problem ..just reinstall the driver for the wireless card if you know that the connection should work ...if you have acces on the net wireless those icons that are x-ed on the right on the task bar are for the other connection methods ..so do not worry ..

Dell Inspiron 6000 won't connet wireless network after reinstall

check DEVICE MANAGER if the wireless card have the right driver installed. if you found that the wireless card have yellow exclamation point on the right it means, you installed a wrong driver.

check also in BIOS if the wireless card is enable and the switch is turn on.

press Fn+F2 to enable wireless radio/anthena (funtion key with wireless icon in blue color)

some dell laptop have hard switch located right side check this and turn the switch on.

if you want to see the icon n task bar, go to control panel....network connection...right click on wireless adapter...select properties...check Show on taskbar

Usually there is switch or button on side of laptop or you have blue antenna icon on kayboard (usually F2)? If you have that blue antenna icon then you can use it together with Fn (function) button on left bottom side of keyboard.

Happy wireless!
