Single cylinder dead bolt only works with key

I installed a Schlage single cylinder deadbolt lock. The key works fine to open and close the lock but I can only remove it in the unlocked position. Also, the thumb side lock will not move unles the key is in the cylinder.

Any suggestions?

Thanks..Sid.

You are 180 degreees out of sync with the other side of the bolt. Take it apart and move your key 180 degrees and reassemble and try it. Im 51% sure this is your trouble

I just installed a Schlage deadbolt. If I lock it from the outside (using the key) it locks fine, but I can't remove the key without unlocking it. Now What?

Hi Winston:
Is it possible to try this:
- pull the lock from the door while leaving the deadbolt in place
- turn the mechanism 180 degrees.
- re-install and give it a try.
Let me know how you progress.

New deadbolt notworking?

You have the lever that goes from the key cylinder part of the lock through the striker portion of the locking assembly turned part way, either in the wrong direction or not turned enough in the right direction so if you take the inside portion of the lock off and pull the outside portion out of the door and rotate the lever to its proper position and then put if all back together in the correct sequence it should work properly.

Why won't my schlage deadbolt key go to the neutral spot in the lock position to remove the key?

You likely have the lever that goes from the outside portion of the lock through the striker/bolt assembly into the inside portion rotated into an incorrect position when you insert it into the striker/bolt assembly.

How do I fix a Schlage deadbolt. B60 series will not unlock from the inside unless the key is inserted from the outside

With the door open, remove the interior trim (thumb turn) from the door, and using the key, turn the deadbolt to the locked position. Now re-install the thumb turn, in the locked position, and with the key removed see if you are able to unlock the deadbolt. I suspect that the tailpiece (part that sticks out of the lock cylinder and into the thumb turn) is not in the correct position.

When the door is locked from the inside it cannot be opened with the key from the outside.

Try removing the lock assembly, and turn the key (and the thumb control) fully to open position, (essentially one way or the other) put together and test again. Some locks have turn limits, and if turned the wrong way on install, your condition happens. The lock simply runs out of travel and hits a stop limit....Simple fix...

Just installed a Schlage secureKey deadbolt. The key goes in the keyhole but won't turn. The inside works fine - locks and unlocks.

the first thing to check is to take the hardware off the door and check the lock cylinder with the key and make sure the key works the cylinder,, lots of times the tail piece is in the wrong position and will not allow the lock to turn. also - sometimes the latch and the lock are not lined up and bind, preventing the cylinder from turning.
but maybe the cyclinder itself is keyed wrong and if you take it back to the store where you bought it you should be able to swap it out for one that works,, install that one and all should be good.

Schlage deadbolt installed about a month ago. The key will not turn the lock from inside but will from outside. Any suggestions?

my guess is that during installation the inside lock cylinders were 1/2 or a full rotation more in one direction than the outside cylinders. remove it from the door, assemble it and try it without installing it. If it doesn;'t work, take it back. If it's old, oil it. if that doesn't work- toss it- you've spent an hour on a $15 item.

Schlage deadbolt will not unlock even with the use of a key?

it sounds as though the linkage that pulls the deadbolt back has disengaged... if you undo the screws from the inside of the door and remove the manual knob there will be 2 more screws holding the key lock to the door. A thin flat bar is attached to the key lock that goes through the deadbolt and into the manual knob. This bar turns with the key, sliding the bolt on its track to lock and unlock the door. Once the lock is apart check the key in the lock to see if the bar turns when the key does. then see if there is anything that may be obstructing the deadbolt from sliding. The locks are pretty indestructible so if there is a problem it may have been from the install... perhaps the door is to wide for the lock to engage properly and the lock worked loose in the 6 months that it worked.

Schlage deadbolt simply failed to unlock, with key from exterior and from inside latch. The feel was like there was no resistance. The lock is only one year old and a previous Schalge deadbolt failed after...

you can buy some "grafite" powder at lowes that is made for stiff locks, it will grease it up. if that doesnt do it the your problem may be in the plunger. might it be out of line? if so straighten it and make sure the it aligns with the strike plate on the door jamb. one of those are sure to fix it.
