Hi hkotterlei
To create new icons, do this
I stopped using Windows 98 ages ago, So, the following instruction is from memory only.

From the Starts -> Program List

  • Locate the program for which you want an icon
  • Right click on it
  • A pop up menu appears
  • Select Create a desktop icon
A desktop icon will be created and placed on the desktop
You can go to that icon on the desktop and rename it by right clicking and ....
Do the above steps for any other programs for which you want an icon on the desktop.

Hope this will help you.
If it does help, please give a rating.
Have a very good day

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

  1. Right-click the desktop and click Properties.
  2. Click the Desktop tab.
  3. Click Customize desktop.
  4. Click the General tab, and then click the icons that you want to place on the desktop.
  5. Click OK.

When I click on "My Computer" there usually shows the drives I have which is the "c" drive and the "d" drive. Suddenly I the "c" drive is gone. Maybe my kids touched the computer and accidentally deleted...

Do a system restore. Go to control panel and open it. Once open, click on system maintenance(opens new window) and click on back up restore center (opens new window)and when that window opens, on the left side of the window will be an option to " Repair Windows using System Restore." Click on that. A window may open up asking to continue, click yes and do a system restore back to the date when the "C" drive was showing. Computer should do a restart afterwards.

Dear, Go back to System Restore and input a date when you know your program was working. But really dear, the Lord has made things so much better for us. Windows 98 is like the movie, gone with the wind.
The reason new Operating systems are developed is because they work better. Windows 98 was rife with problems.
Pleae consider investing in a new operating system. I have WindosXP on my pc and Windows Vista on my laptop. Both are great.
Be blessed.

My desktop is blank all icons are gone with icon tray !

- Open Task Manager
- Terminate Explorer.exe (may of hung on start up) on the Processes Tab
- Back on the Applications Tab, click on New Task and type explorer after about a minute does the start menu and windows bar come back?
- If so download all the latest virus defs for your AV software and also the latest (and free) spybot search and destroy 1.6.2 - do a sweep for both spyware and software and remove all and reboot your PC.

This should help you - if not joy I would boot into Safe Mode and look at a system restore point. Also look for any unusual processes that are running in Task Manager - or ones you don't recognize since you last looked at them - if one looks dodgy, do a google search on it to see if its harmful and should be killed.

Good Luck

Hard drive not working properly

What is the original OS? If it's XP you can't install 98 over the top of it without formatting it to FAT32 first.
