Hi there
With some Brother printers you can try this.
Access the internal maintenance mode by pressing the Menu/Set button, then press * 2 8 6 4 within 2 seconds. This should put you in the maintenance mode menu. Enter 80, and then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.
This will reset the purge count value. Then the printer will restart, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.
Some times this happens because of using cheap compatible ink cartridges if this is the case change the ink cartridges.
Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

Hi I have gone through to the purge recount; although the number was less than 6000 and now the purge number is 00000. The printer has not restarted it self, what should I do now? Sorry to say this error refers to a print head failure. It is not a user changeable part. It will need repairing by a Brother service agent and it will probably cost more than the printer is worth.
4F message indicates that the print-head is faulty, you will need to replace it to make it work again. Before you replace it, you may want to try this, see if it will remove the error message: Access the internal maintenance mode by pressing the Menu/Set button, then press * 2 8 6 4 within 2 seconds. This should put you in the maintenance mode menu. Enter 80, then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3. Cannot turn printer off and can't find a solution to this. I have seen
unable to CLEAN before, but never unable to CHANGE. What is this and
how can I fix it? Model MFC-420 CN.
51 error says that the purge assembly is stuck and not cycling properly. If you can power up and get the printhead to the center and unplug again, look with a flashlight in the far right corner where the printhead parks for any paper scraps or things that don't belong and remove them it might work again. Otherwise a shop repair to possibly replace the cleaning assembly.

try this step by step.without missing any thing.

My MFC 665CW popped this same "Unable To Print 4F" error recently making the machine fully useless. Just an annoying triple beep and repeat error message to screen when trying to do anything at all with it. I wrote Brother about it. They said to check all through the machine (with a light) for any paper torn off inside, or unwanted foreign objects. This is a good step to do anyway to help maintain the printer. If that is not it, they said it would be a mechanical malfunction. I tried "resetting" by unplugging it for a while as they suggested to no avail. Also while I did find a bit of paper torn off down in my MFC 665 removing it had no effect.
I saw on this site codes for another MFC to clear memory and reset the cleaning unit count code to zero. It worked on two of my brother mfc 820cw units. The third mfc 5840cn had unable to print error message 46- nothing at Brother. they want you to take everything to a repair shop.they don't help at all. Then the error went to 4F when I tried toclear the memory. As Iunderstand that message- it means I have to replace the printer head. Have no clue where or what it is. But I can read a manual as well as anyone and follow directions to fix it! Can't be worse than it is now! Good luck
