Hi, there are a few games that have a mic test in the beginning of the game . Bowsers inside story and mario and sonic at the olympic games are 2 that i know of. That is the best way to see if it is the game you are playing or if it is the mic itself. I repair these ds lite's and to change a mic I charge $25.00. I would try the mic test first.
There are 3 things that may be happening here -
1. Your mic may be muted, try unmuting it.
2. You may have to unplug your mic, restart your xbox, and then plug your mic back in.
3. Your mic may be permanently broken and you may need a replacement.
A few reasons for not being able to talk through the mic is that if parental settings are set. Parental settings can stop you from talking and, if set right, can stop you from hearing other people, which isn't the problem. It could also be that the mic on the headset is broken. If it is, you will have to buy a new one. Try using someone else's headset. If theirs works, then it confirms that it is only your headset. If it doesn't, it might mean that either your Xbox 360 remote isn't working right for voice, or parental settings are restricting you from that action.
The mic is connected by a small white wire that runs through the hinge section. It can get caught in the slot the top screens ribbon cable goes in and get broken. This is the most common cause. However it is also possible the end connected to the board has come loose. But it's more likely that the wire has been broken.
I fixed the MIC on my DS LITE very easily, after first replacing the MIC with a new one and finding that it still did not work (not an easy thing to replace either)! The internal MIC signal is routed to a contact at the front edge of the DS, which allows the internal MIC to be disconnected when an external MIC is connected. If this contact (which is normally held closed by the springy nature of the contact) gets dirty, then it effectively goes open circuit, disconnecting the internal MIC signal. You can use a cotton bud and a little WD-40 (contact cleaner) to clean the contact (clean the two pins next to the 3.5mm jack connector) to restore the electrical contact. Takes 5 minutes and is a LOT easier and cheaper than replacing the MIC or paying someone to repair it!
