Question about Boating
With boat on trailer put drive in gear,engine off,remove bellow cover on the lower unit and check u-joint for any slack or noise when you try to rotate prop.Does clacking happen more when you raise lower unit?

This sounds like the cross bearings in your drive. With the engine off and the drive down shift in to gear and lock prop by turning to left.
remove trim rams that move drive up and down. remove all 6 nuts that hold drive on to back of boat. pull drive off boat. look to see if all is dry inside no oil,water,rubber grab hold of the shaft and see if there is a lot of play at this time I say replace both cross bearings they run about $40.00 ea and pick up a new drive gasket set to reinstall drive. One more thing put your hand in the bellow hose and put your fingers in the gimbal bearing and move to make sure it moves smooth and has no play. reinstall drive and don't forget to lock prop to the left when inserting drive in to boat..
