Question about Tascam 2488 Portastudio Multitrack Recorder System

1 Answer

USB Export!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!AAAAHHHH I agree with the guy hear that said the 2488 manual is crazy. They seem ta leave a lot out. SO, what i don't understand is what exactly you can export. Can I only export virtual tracks, I saw the dudes post that said you can hit INPUT and export multiple virt tracks, but can I export multiple physical tracks. Or any at all? I want to send 2-4 songs w/ guitar, bass, voc, drums, to a laptop or pc. Seems like it should be possable, and easy. Can anybody help?

MY PC wont recognize my Tascam Portastudio device2488, i have Vista

Tascam 2488:
I use Vista and my 2488 MK1.

When you plug in the USB cable from the 2488 into your Vista PC, Vista will always say 'not recognised'.
You do not need any PC drivers for the 2488. On the Tascam 2488, go to 'Menu', then 'Disk', then 'USB Open/Close', then click 'Yes'.
On your PC the 2488 will appear as a new hard drive in the 'Computer' folder, called HDR2488.
You'll see three folders in there: WAVE, SMF and BACKUP.
Use the WAVE folder to import and export WAV files, the SMF folder to import midi files to the 2488, and the BACKUP folder is where you can import and export Backup files to and from the 2488.
Hope this helps!

Shortcut for exporting multiple tracks

While not mentioned in the manual (page 68 dealing with usb export) you can indeed select multiple tracks to export to the fat partition at once. Under the 'wav in/out' menu item on the 'usb export' you'll see a track list. Simply press the 'insert' button next to any tracks you want to export and a check mark will be placed next to the track which flags it for export. When you press enter it will export all the checked tracks as wav files to the fat partition.

Export time on TASCAM 2488 is really long, exporting over 7000MB to FAT, takes 2 hours?

I've never transferred a file that large myself yet, but some song files I have transferred do take upwards of an hour and I agree, that's a long time. To not notice so much, what I've come to do is first, take a well deserved break, or even work on the computer end of things ie: song organizations, really anything I can use that 'down time' for which will help make me more productive and/or organized. as the 2488 needs lots of organizational skills going on in one's head. Or, as I suggested at the outset- just take a break from it all as recording does tend to get long in the tooth after a while. Maybe even read the manual- as boring as THAT is, it has certainly helped me...some..seriously!

You'll need your PC as the intermediary. You'll have to do a USB export of the tracks you want from the DP01 to your PC and then connect the 2488's USB to the PC and do a USB import of those tracks into new tracks on the 2488.

Page 40 of the DP01FX manual will explain using the USB connection and page 43 details the steps for performing a USB export.

In the 2488 NEO manual refer to pages 80 and 81 for using the USB connection and importing the tracks.

Hope this helps. Best of luck.

I am trying to connect my tascam 2488 to my computer using a usb, how do I export from the 2488?

Spoke to tascam directly, I couldn't see paying for something that I could solve by picking up the phone. Thanks anyway for the offer, best of luck in your business.

I can't import midi files

There shouldn't be any compatibility problems, especially since you can transfer files one way already. You might want to make sure any wav files you are trying to import to tracks on the 2488 are saved as 'mono' waves rather than 'stereo'. The 2488 won't import a stereo wav file.

Another problem sould be naming. Try to stick to the old dos 8.3 naming standard ( for any files which you wish to import.

Hope this helps.

Connect yamaha keyboard to tascam 2488 MKII

There are 8 inputs on the back. 4 of them support XLR type microphone connections, but also double as 1/4 inch and the remaining four are just 1/4 inch. These are all line level inputs and you can use any of them for a keyboard hookup. Typically you might leave the XLR inputs (A thru D) available for mics and take the next two (E and F) to use from your keyboards L and R outputs. Then just assign those inputs to two adjacent channels (tracks) or one of the stereo pairs, turn up the input levels for those inputs and the faders for those tracks and you'll be able to hear the keyboard playing through the 2488 (or whatever monitors/or stereo you have hooked up to it for monitoring). To record the keyboard simply arm whatever tracks you have those inputs assigned to for recording and record away.

Don't know how to Pre-Master or Burn to CD, please help me!

Don Q -

This answer assumes you have the 2488 mkI and not the newer mkII because the process may differ slightly on the mkII.

To premaster you first have to set an out point for the end of your pre-master (the start point is always zero). Go to the 'Audio CD' menu item and choose 'pre-master' under that. You'll see the word 'mastering' appear in the top left of the screen to let you know you've entered mastering mode. Make sure you have the tracks unmuted that you want to mix into the pre-master and have all of your eq, panning, etc set the way you want. Then hit record and play. The pre-master records to a stereo pair of dedicated internal tracks. You can redo the premaster as many times as you like which will overwrite those internal premaster tracks. You can clone the premastered tracks to a stereo pair of tracks, export them as waves or burn them to a CDR.

fnawesomewes - You have to press record and play to record your premaster.

2488 to pro tools

There is no way to 'sync' with protools from the 2488. In order to use your 2488 tracks in protools you have to first export your tracks as wav files and move them to your computer via usb and then import them into protools.

To get Protools files into your Tascam 2488 you'll have to export your Protools files into mono wav files first. They must also have a sampling rate of 44.1KHz and can be either 16 or 24 bit. Then load these files into your 2488 via usb and import them into tracks on the 2488.

Usb file transfer

In reading and working with the unit, I have learned that the file transfer is for backup only. If you want to manipulate the file they have to be transferred individually via your sound card or an interface.
