Question about Edirol FA-66 Sound Card

1 Answer

Seem to have developed a problem with my audio recording and playback using Roland's FA-66 (Editrol). I use Cakewalk SONAR, Sony Sound Forge and Vegas Video softwares, and all of them show the same sound anomoly with the FA-66. (Even using the internal SB LIVE! digital soundcard, some crackling issues have developed at the same time). With the FA-66, the monitored sound through headphones is fine, and the sound going into the editing software is normal for about 20-30 seconds of recording, then the audio develops a crackling distorted sound, even seems to CHANGE in PITCH, and develops a cyclic beat (cursor playing back waveform also indicates a PAUSE and GO effect on the screen) and is audible in the playback (including the distortion). If I turn the power OFF from the FA-66 for one or two seconds and reinitialize it in the software, again the sound is clear for about a half minute and the same thing starts all over again. This system used to work fine just weeks ago. Now I don't know what has changed to cause this. Using Windows XP Home Edition SP3. No hardware was added since then to PC. (Numerous Widow's Updates only). And as far as I know the Norton Antivirus was upgraded from 2009 to 2010 version.

I could not get that link or pasting that link into web browser to work. Something not right with the www's ...

Could you please repost the correct link or address? Thanks.

It seems that I am having record and playback issues even in Sound Forge using my SB LIVE! soundcard, and also with the FA-66 in Sound Forge also.

The effect I am getting with Sound Forge playback of even KNOWN good MP3 or WAV files is that the cursor moves unevenly across the waveform and sounds like a bad scratched up 78 record .. lots of tics and pops (not hiss)..

WINAMP player seems to fair better in playing my audio files, but even with that one I hear spuradic tics and pops. Windows Media player is WORSE, but now quite as bad as Sound Forge.

  • Zoltan G Nov 16, 2009

No I have not tried another soundcard or USB. But all of this present equipment worked fine a month or so ago, so something has happened withing the PC either software or hardware related that must be causing the problem.

Other than normal Windows fix and security updates, the only thing that I seem to remember updating was Norton Antivirus 2009 with which everything was working OK .. but I don't recall when this exact tic and pops issue came in .. while STILL with Norton AV 2009 or the updated 2010 version. Even when I have AV installed I normally DISABLE it for several hours or until next reboot, when I use sound or video editing software since it bogs down everything. I DON't COMPLETELY UNINSTALL it .. just DEACTIVATE it . Maybe with 2010 deactivation is not enough? And perhaps it might be causing this sound problem. But I am hesitant to UNINSTALL it if I need to use the internet or e-mail. I don't want to end up with a virus on top of everything else.

  • Zoltan G Nov 16, 2009

Ok .. I disable Norton .. nothing else was running .. closed web and Outlook Express. . opened Sound Forge .. and using the MIC atteched to my SB LIVE! and whistled a tune for about 35 seconds and let Sound Forge record.

Upon playback I had tics and pops almost every 4-5 seconds randomly on playback. I noticed it does this also sometimes on audio/video say from YouTube on the web .. Other times depending on the video it goes for minutes without a tic or pop. Same with audio files streaming from web.

Well I have a complete System drive Norton Ghost backup dating back to October 21 .. I am not sure if I already had this audio issue back then.

And have numerous Incremental backups almost everyday since then.

It will be a major tedious job to go back all the way, and still have the problem, but I guess I have no other choice.

  • Zoltan G Nov 16, 2009

My big worry is that perhaps October 21st won't be back far enough .. and I don't have any backup earlier than that !

Then what .. I will be in the same bind as now.

  • Zoltan G Nov 16, 2009

I have several versions of Sound Forge and Vegas from SF 6e, 7b, 8d and 9e .. and Vegas 4e, 5d, and 6d .. the problem is in ALL of them, including Cakewalk Sonar 8.3..

What I also noticed, in opening all these softwares which I haven't mentioned (including most other larger softwares) it takes an inordinate amount of time to churn to open these, where as before they were much much faster in opening. The hard disks are defragmented, all temporary files are wiped, but seems the HD's are just not loading things like before. The paging file seems to be proper .. about 1151MB min and max and is on a separate HD and partition from System disk just like in the past.

So are you suggesting that I take my largest drive H which has about 329 GB free .. create a PRIMARY partition on the EXTENDED which Drive H is right now .. use Ghost to RESTORE contents of entire C drive unto this newly created partition? Make it active and bootable, take the bootable setting off the orginal C. and boot from the H partition now C.. and see if the October backup will work??

try these 2 sites, i believe they have some good info you need and will probably solve your issue. ive heard some horror stories about norton. unistall and see what comes about. it seems as though too many connections are going to screw this item up and norton will do the same.

Goodmorning, I'll try to explain the problem: when I listen to the files (MIDI and MP3) directly with Cakewalk sd-50 using the USB Key the playback is correct. When I listen to the files playing them...

You have to make sure that the clockspeed of the program that you use to play the files back with matches the clockspeed of the program that created them. I might be wrong about that. Here is a good resource: You will have to join to access but its free and the Killer Home Recording setting up is also free from the site and is full of good info.

I have sonar 6 le on windows 7. I am using a cakewalk roland interface. something is wrong with the sound, it makes noise during playback. I also hooked a mxl v67 mic and it is sounding pretty wired dont...

I suggest you make a backup of your music files, uninstall cakewalk and reboot your computer to make certain there are no files left in the RAM then re-nstall it. That will ensure that your installation is a clean one.
If that has no effect, remove the sound drivers from your system and re-install the latest versions from either Windows or the manufacturer's web site.
That should fix your problem.
Hope this helps.

Stuttering during audio playback in Sonar

The stuttering is caused by excessive CPU usage, in other words: you have too little CPU power to play the file with the inserted synth smoothly. You could try inserting a different synth or play with the rendering-options of the synth (like disabling aliasing, etc.) or increase the audio buffer size (under audio options ?), but the only longterm solution is upgrading to a much faster computer.

Even when you find some tweak which lets you play the file (just) smoothly, adding another effect or synth is likely to cause it to stutter again, since your computer doesn't meet the official (!) minimal requirements for running Cakewalk Sonar 6, which is at least a Pentium 4 1.3GHz computer (and you have a 1.0GHz computer).

I would recommend upgrading your computer to something which at least meets the "recommend requirements" of Cakewalk Sonar 6, which is a Pentium 4 2.8GHz or newer (like any Intel Core 2 system), when you're serious about composing music.

Cakewalk Sonar - Edirol UA-1000 crackles on playback!

That's a latency issue it sounds like.
There's a slider under "Audio" .

Move it in increments towards "slow", test it as you go.
Leave it at the highest setting possible that doesn't crackle.

I've heard this so bad that it sounds like a gun going off.
It scares the Hell out of you when it happens !

Looks like a nice system. I might have to get my wife one of these.

I couldn't find any support on about it. In fact the pictures wern't even posted up anymore on the product.

I have one suggestion. Is this unit plugged into a surge protector? You could be getting something filtering in through you power like another electrical appliance. You might want to try a stronger surge protector to filter it out.

Sonar 6 Producer - palyback quality issue

I had this problem today whilst installing Sonar on my new laptop. It wasn't the click track. It was the playback glitching, clicking and rattling. I put the buffer size to maximium but it was still happening.

I got round it by downloading the latest version of ASIO4all (2.9 beta4) and installing it. I then opened Sonar 6, options, audio, advanced, then selecting ASIO in the driver mode drop down box. Then I closed Sonar and reopened it.

If you use one device for recording and playback it should work now but if like me you use seperate devices or if it doesn't work click, options, audio, general, ASIO panel, advanced options. Here you can select your inputs and outputs. Play around a bit here. Mine worked when the output of the playback device was selected and both the input and output of the recording device was selected.

ASIO4all sorted out my latency issues as well.

Hope it helped.

Edirol Fa66 Problem

I bought the FA-66 because I use Cakewalk Sonar and they sell this interface on the Cakewalk site with thier name on it. I've had nothing but problems with this unit as described above. I've tried it on two different computer and it does not work on either. I also use an RME Fireface 800 on both these machines, same set up and it works flawlessly. Drop the Edirol/Roland FA-66 and try something else like an RME card or something. That would be my suggestion. It's a shame Cakewalk promots this piece of garbage. I've tried Edirol/Roland technical support and the guy just kept saying the sound card works fine, like it was just my problem.
