Question about Sony KP-57WS510 57" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

Set turns off randomly

When set turns off, the screen goes blue (for awhile, blue was the only color) or red (the current favorite color.) The light blinks an error code of 8 blinks. Sometime the set will work properly if left off for a few minutes, and at other times it keeps shutting off a few seconds after being turned back on.

Can dust build up on a picture tube's circuit board cause them to overheat and shut the tv down.

dust will not cause an issue like this in this type of set--RCA? it means a short of some type exists and the set shuts down or blanks the tubes--all you have described as far as appearance is normal.

RCA sets like this can be difficult to repair and also if you Google the model number you will see they have a lot of "problems".

Why is the blue light on front blinking

My answer is based on the model number here-AV-56WP74 or similar--blue light blinking is shutdown to protect the power supply in the set.

A few questions you could answer:

before this happened was screen red (too much) or had colors skewed or a little 3d looking?

The most common issue on this set if that is convergence and it can easily escalate to where it shuts the set down and blue blinks constant.

There is a simple way to confirm or deny that issue--Got someone willing to try that? Set will be unplugged and entire front grill under screen removed to try it(I can tell you how and what to do)

If no skill at all--consult a shop--if want I will answer questions or comments you post on this page--(add a comment button)

Tv just turns off while watching it the screen goes blue than turns off

This is one of a group of sets (KP-57ws500) that had bad picture tubes---all of them had this trouble.

The picture tubes are no longer available from Sony--only available on a rebuild basis from another company--very expensive and usually not worth doing---blue is most common tube to show trouble.

The set is shutting down because if the screen goes bright blue---it pulls too much current and the set goes into protective shutdown.

There is one fairly easy thing that you may be able to do-----I have done it before.

What it entails is getting at the Screen/ Focus control block and turning the Blue Screen control down--if it works it may just buy you some time but I have seen several sets where it allowed the set to have some more life.

Usually if the set was working the way this problem begins is you on a blank video input notice a slight blue color in the background with some faint curved lines visable.

If you want to attempt to do the adjustment--let me know and I will tell you how.

I am here to help people----I have seen over 100 of these Sony sets with this problem---replaced tubes in many of them when they were new or under warranty.

Screen goes all blue

if it is a KP65ws500 it is one of a group of sets made by Sony where all the picture Tubes(set has a RED, Green, and Blue Tube.) ARE BAD. Most of these sets had all three tubes replaced during a program Sony had. The tubes are NO LONGER AVAILABLE---the only way to get one is remove the tube and send it out for rebuild---most of these cost about 250-300 just for the tube.

The set is shutting down because when the screen goes bright blue it detects one of the CRT's(tubes) is pulling way to much current.

The problem with Replacing your Blue Tube is cost and----sooner or later the other two(red and green) are going to fail also.

best advice is maybe not to fix it.

I replaced dozens of the tubes in these sets when Sony had a recall and provided the tubes for free and paid for the labor etc.

I know I am not giving you good news but I do this here for free and if this has been helpful give me a vote here. Thanks!

Sounds like a Arcing CRT tube(s)!, You may have a bad color tube!, Set has one red, blue & green tube. If ones at fault, And you heard a POP - more then likely a BAD CRT, The Set is Turning Itself OFF to prevent any more Damage!.... onegeo

Aadjusting screen colors

They should be adjusted to set voltages. however it is best to shut the color level to the lowest setting then try t balance the screens to achieve the best black and white picture. then turn up your color level. Your brightness level should also be set to 50 % then when you adjust for the best B&W picture. You will have better color and brightness when you reset your color and brightness levels. Hope this helps.
