Question about Whirlpool GS5SHAXN Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

The refridgerator side of the unit is not staying cold enough. It is running about 48 degrees. This happened about 2 months ago, and I cleaned the coils and turned the refridgerator side of the thermostat down some. The wife turned the thermostat back up some a few days ago because meat was freezing in the meat keeper. Now we are running to warm again....

If your model is the GS5SHAXN it has an electronic control for the temperatures. Not the typical thermostat. If it malfunctions either complete failure or an unstable control of temperatures. The part number is 2255233 at one place and part number 1016379 at another but the basic OEM number is the first one 2255233. I am going through some repair manuals to see if its possible something else might be causing this. I will return as soon as I can to see if that is the only reason that may be causing this. But with electronic controls I believe that it may be 48 degrees in the fresh food compartment is not safe. These controls are located in the fresh food section and connect with the temperature control. I'll be back soon, Sea Breeze

Found a parts manual here=> Whirlpool GS5SHAXN on page 16 there are 2 parts listed that can cause this problem and that is number 28 in picture and called part number 2188819 Thermistor.

Then the other part is #6 in picture and a little different part number

2303805 than the first number I gave you. That is normal for that to happen.

The manufacturer has replaced Part Number (WPL) 2303805 with the exact replacement Part Number (WPL) 2255233.
Anyway you can find the parts starting with the thermistor first by clicking here=> 2188819 Thermistor and then try the control by clicking here=> Electronic Control 2255233 or you can visit my site and I will help you locate other options. Click Here=> SEA BREEZE or here Appliance Parts Southeast I will try to help you the best I can with this but I have a bad feeling it's one or both parts that may need replaced, I will be here or at the other locations if you need me, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Ge refer model psc25mstass fresh food section not cold enough freezer cooling fine

I realize this is an old post but information is always helpful if it is correct. I have a GE Model TFX22ZRB, Main tools needed are a refridgerator thermometer, a cheap multimeter, 1/4" hex driver, phillip screwdriver and regular blade scewdriver, above all, alow time for tempeture change when measuring tempeture. The freezer is running at -8 degrees C or aproximately 28 degrees F. I don't care about 1 or 2 degrees at this point in the freezer, the defrost system is working ok, The freezer is cold enough. The fresh food section is running at 48 degrees F, the damper is wide open between the freezer and cold food section, I manually removed the damper door and controls since I am only interested in seeing if I can drive the fresh food section colder. Looks like the fresh food thermostate controls the compressor and not the damper to shut off the cooling process when the tempeture gets cold enough. Since the fresh food section does not get cold enough (this should be in the uppers 30s F) there is no need to move the fresh food thermostate out of the normal range setting (mid point in my case) with the operator control. Defrost heaters ok, this unit uses 2 heaters hooked in series with a evaporator coil thermostate also in series with the heaters. Heaters aproximately 25 ohms total risistance, coil thermostate open at room temp and closed when below 32 degrees. Only other item in circuit is the defrost timer, this can be manually advance to open and close the defrost circuit, in my case, when in the defrost mode, the evaporator fan stops and the heaters heat up. The defrost timer in my case has a 12-16 hour cycle time and a 30 min defrost time, so in a 24 hour period I may get only one defrost cycle. One item of importance. make sure something has not fallen in the lower back or the fresh food section of the refridgerator to block the air flow return, this will effect the coo;ing process. Now with the damper wide open, the defrost circuit working ok I am going to look at the evaporator fan itself for speed, shifted blades or the air circulation between the freezer and the fresh food section, I have cleaned the condenser coils but I am leaving the condensor and compressor out of the equation since the freezer is cold enough but at this point I am considering the possibility, I may need to replace the fridge if the compressor is not working to par.

Kenmore model 105.53534300 side by side refridgerator not cooling

Relays are located on the left side of the compressor. How long ago did you smell the burning smell? Are you 100% sure the compressor is running? If it is, nothing is wrong with the relays. Although sometimes it is hard to tell if the compressor is running. By morning temps will be higher than tonight if compressor isnt running. If it isnt running, relays must be changed. I will post shortly on how to change the relays.

Refrigerator and freezer not staying cold enough, but running

Good day,
First, on some versions of your machine, there is a fan on the bottom rear, make sure if it has one, that it is running.
If it were a defrost component, as you suggested, then you would see a build up of frost and ice on the rear panel in the freezer compartment.
If so, you would need to defrost it. There are 3 components to a defrost system. The 2 you described, behind that rear panel, and a timer in the fresh food compartment, in the upper housing.
Below is a tutorial on defrost systems. You need a ohm meter to test the components.
If none of the above apply, then it is in the sealed system (compressor, leaks in the tubing or restriction in the lines) and would require a trained tech to sort it out.

Gladiator ref is not cooling properly

Check to see if there is cold air coming from the freezer to the refridgerator side through the vent holes The compressor maybe getting weak or the freon charge maybe low. Does the unit run a long time before it shuts off? 50 degrees is not cold enough for a freezer. You should be around 32 or less.

Refrigerator does not get cold - GE side by side

In my GE side-by-side refrigerator (model number GSS20IEMDWW), there is a motor-controlled flapper door between the freezer and fresh food side. Cold air from the freezer side cools the fresh food side when that flapper door is open.

It is located at the top of the fresh food side on the dividing wall between the fresh food side and the freezer. If this is blocked with something (large left-over container, soft drink bottles, etc), it _may_ be enough to prevent sufficient cooling of the fresh food side.

Of course, there may be a more serious problem with the flapper door mechanism or the control unit that signals the flapper door to open/close.

The vegetable and deli drawers may have a small opening (manually controlled with a wheel or a slider of some sort) that connects those drawers to the freezer side, thus explaining how those areas are still functioning as expected.
