If the computer hardware was "designed for Vista", it usually means that device-drivers for audio/video/network components for Windows XP will not be available. Switch back to Vista, or upgrade to Windows 7.

Windows vista ultimate doesn't recognize my labtec lcs 2424 speakers but it does my sound card

Being windows vista is most likely is a driver problem. Is it internal or external sound system, not the card that works. If the manufacturer does not have an updated driver by now you can set the device to work like windows xp and it should only effect that device. Also search the web there are driver packs out there for windows vista, keep in mind its all the drivers for everything on one large compressed file so it should be a large file size.

Ultimately I would say upgrade to windows 7, its how windows vista should have worked. I have devices from windows 98 that work on win7 no problems. Vista was just very premature in its release. Hope this can help. Sorry for my bad spelling.

I downgraded from vista to xp and now i need a sound driver compatible for my gateway:w34oui

This is another tough one.
Since GW does not have Win XP drivers available for your system, it will be difficult to find a sound driver that will work. You could try to use the Vista driver, but I would be skeptical that it will work to use that driver because of the way that sounds are processed in Vista/Win 7.
You didn't mention why you did the downgrade, but if it was performance related, Win 7 should work fine with your system. If there was a certain program etc., that you need, there is another option.
There are many USB soundcards that will will work well with Win XP, and they should not have the XP problem since their hardware is designed to work with XP. Note: If you go this route, make sure you choose one that is Win XP compatible. One other thing on this option, though. Your internal speakers may not route sound through the USB soundcard, which would mean then that you would need external speakers to get sound. I understand that may be a deal-breaker, which is why I would (unless you specifically need XP) either go back to Vista or upgrade to Win 7. Some version of Win 7 feature "XP mode" which allows you to run programs in a virtual Win XP environment. I have not had perfect luck getting XP programs to work, but it's worth a try.

When I upgraded to a new computer, I went from Windows XP to Windows Vista 64. Now my Boston Digital BA735 speakers do not work. Any suggestions ?

You should have checked with Boston before you upgraded. If you can't find drivers with Google, then they don't exist.

And FWIW, Vista sucks, that was a bad choice.
