Question about Western Digital Caviar SE WD2000JS 200 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have problem with my harddisk. I have it in external box, and when I turn it on it works just for cca 15 seconds and then it stops, meaning I can't access anything and windows is saying "not responding" in top of window. When I tried to put it into PC, it got recognized, but the filesystem wasn't recognized and only thing windows offered me is to format it, which is not option for me, as I want to keep data on it. What is worse, the warranty expired 2 weeks ago... Any suggestions? Thanks Manthess

Wow, I have recovered everything, except for one iso(not important). Whatismore, I have found receipt and realized that the warranty ends on 21.11.2009. So now I have my data and, very likely, I will have new harddisk. The only problem I had was that I couldn't erase data from it before I sent it back for service. I tried a lot of different ways, but nothing worked.
Thanks a lot, you saved me!

It seems that the hard-drive is "dying", and that the "root" of the file-directory on the disk-drive is "corrupt".

Look online for a "File Scavenger" program -- it reads a disk-drive, sector-by-sector, hoping to "stitch-and-sew" together sectors into files, so that you can "recover" files, and copy them to your 'C:' drive.

Yes, it sucks that your warranty has expired.
Does your credit-card company "double" the warranty for items purchased on your credit-card?

Help my hd just stop working

If the drive is external, you can try to remove it from its case and attempt to read in using another adapter. If the drive itself will not spin up a data recovery service may be your only option (usually expensive)

Hitachi deskstar, SATA 3.0 500gb drive just stopped showing on any pc, mac, but had never made any noises or problems previously... Please help me I have so much that I need on there, it just remains...

So, you mean it does make noises and has problems nowadays ? If it does, it probably means there's a serious problem going on at your harddisk. Making sound often refers to a bad motor or even heads, which are crashing at the silicon platters.

Maybe the harddisk does get spinning, which you will notice immediately, if you hold the HDD in your hand. The gyroscopic effect of the rotating platters makes the harddisk feel a little heavier. If there's no strange noise, then please check the datacable, if it is connected to the harddisk. If it is, you even should study the connector at the disk, when unplugged. Check if the connector is still firmly connected to the PCB(*) of the harddisk.
(*) PCB is the small printboard where all tiny electronic components are soldered to.

If this is an external harddisk, built into an USB-enclosure, you might consider to switch it to another USB-enclosure. Maybe there's a malfunction in the electronics of this USB-enclosure. If you don't have an enclosure at hand, you can still built it into your computer, for further testing.

Will a latop work without main local disk

Yes, and can load from an external harddisk (if your BIOS supported to load from external harddisk).
there's nothing special if you run your computer without a harddisk.

My Hp Pavillion laptop dv2214tu doesnot boot beyond the HP INVENT logo page. I tried performing the Primary Hard Disk check as stated on the HP Support site but its not happening.I also reseated the RAM...

Unscrew your Laptop HardDrive bay and remove your harddisk first, then try to boot your system wthout the Harddisk inside. If it Boots past the HP Invent Logo Page, then your harddisk is the one that is faulty, if still doesnt, get another good, working RAM, apart from the one in your system, and use it to test your laptop...making sure that the harddisk is still not inside...then if it boots insert your Harddisk back with the new RAM, and restart your system.
If in the first case it boots (i.e wihout the harddisk inside)...then it means your harddrive is faulty, just retrieve your file on it and get a new one.
If in the second case it works (i.e with a new external RAM) then just change your RAM instead.

External Hard Drive is not accessible or readable

I recommend that you take it to a professional. your driver has error on it and the expert should restore your data from it before the disk going stops working completely.sound like a harddisk hardware error.

I would suggest the external casing of the harddisk that contains its power supply is busted, so you need to change the casing or remive the harddisk from the casing and connect in inside
