Speaker buttons don't function correctly

The Speaker A and Speaker B buttons select pairs of speakers. If you have connected a pair of speakers to the "SPEAKER A" terminals on the rear of your Onkyo receiver, you will hear stereo sound when the Speaker A button is pressed on the front panel. If, for some reason, you wanted to connect a second set of speakers in the same room or perhaps another room you would connect those speakers to the "SPEAKER B" terminals on the rear. Pressing both buttons on the front panel would send sound output to both sets of speakers

If you haven't done already, then verify that zone 2 works without the selector. If the speakers definitely work and the zone output definitely works then the speaker selector must be the culprit! It's pretty difficult to mess up the wiring with speakers, as even if polarity is reversed, you will still hear something.

I have an Onkyo A-7055 amd want to hook up two speakers. Looks like a dozen connectors in the back of the unit... which ones to use. If I experiment is there a chance I could blow out the unit?

Do you mean you want to connect 2 pairs of speakers, or just 2 speakers like you say in your question? There are 4 pairs of screws on the back of your amplifier on the upper right side of the rear panel near the fuse cap and the AC outlets. Each pair of screws will be connected to one speaker. Your Onkyo can be connected to 4 speakers. If you want to connect only 2 speakers, use the screws labeled "SPEAKER A" and connect the speakers to the left and right channels, and make sure you connect the + speaker wire to the screw with the red marking around it. Connect your other speakers the same way, one speaker per pair of screws.

I just enherited a pair of bose 901 speakers

My suggestion is do not hook the 901's directly to the Onkyo. It is compatable, but they WANT more than what the receiver can give them. I suggest going and getting a dedicated amplifier for them. Trust me, you'll be a lot happier going that route.

Running 4 12s with two insignia 1000 watt amps

Use a pair of two-channel amps that are two-ohm stable, and wire a pair of subs to each amp. Wire them in parallel so the amps see two ohms (wiring in series will show four ohms). Doing this effectively "doubles" the power of the amps. If the amps are not two-ohm stable, they'll fail. Parallel wiring means putting the positive wire of sub 1 to the positive terminal of channel 1 on the amp, and the negative wire of sub 1 on the negative terminal of channel 2. Do the opposite for the second sub. This will give you a LOT of bass response as long as your sub enclosures are properly sized for the speakers.
