Panasonic ndhd 650B VCR no nicam sound

I have a panasinic vcr (nvhd650B) and am unable to get nicam stereo on it anymore, yet it has just been serviced. Is there any chance you could comment on the problem?

I'm proficient with a soldering iron, so if something needs replacing i can do it if i can get the part. I thought the heads etc might need readjusting again so i tried that. I can get the picture perfect but no matter how hard i try, even though the sound is clear it is not nicam (the little L & R symbols on the Db meter dont light up like they used to).

thanks for your reply. I took it back to the guy who fixed it and apparently it needs a part. Probably the pitch head roller. I don't think its settings were altered.

He now says the Audio heads have worn out. The video heads are fine, so i am only getting mono quality sound. I took the head off and gave them a good clean and demagnitizing. Sounds a little better now but still mono. BTW this is a very good deck. never had any probs with it, bought in 1996 for euro96 so its had a long life i suppose. pic quality still good. Im wondering if it may be possible to actually repair worn heads in some way, but they are quite delicate. A new head is £100+! Quite why they are still trying to sell them at this high price i dont know...

thanks - i'll try to locate the amp and see if anything is amiss there. Im beginning to wonder about this repair guy. It seems he was being lazy. Only after i took it back and said the sound problem wasnt fixed, he said it didnt show up the first time but tests confirmed that the an audio head had worn out very badly.

Yep, i do check ebay for heads. Im also looking for the same deck or a 660 as they use identical heads.

Have the settings been altered?
If you don't have the manual to adjust it properly, you can get it free from the Panasonic website.

VCR's heads have an amplifer (often in metal box) I would check that out before replacing the head. If you do need to replace it try getting a second hand model off places like E-Bay. For the cost of £100 you might get 3 650 machines. One of them with a good head is all you need, even if other bits don't work on the E-Bay purchase.

NO. Your VCR is not stereo capable (white and red), it is only MONO (white) so only connect the white RCA plug to the white jack. Leave the red cable unconnected.

How do you connect the vcr to the stereo

If you want to connect vcr to stereo, I assume it is for the sound feed.( to play vcr sound to amplifier) if so ,vcr should have phono socket outputs , connect them to a input on your amp , and sellect that input to play sound from vcr.
hope that makes sence

Connecting my tv and vcr so i can use the vcr remote control

You can always push "03" on a universal remote programmed to work your TV. A better solution is to connect the devices properly. You shouldn't use the tuner inputs for a VCR/DVD player, or you will get a poorer picture and no stereo sound. See the instruction manual for your player and TV. Use a stereo audio/video cable to connect them and select the proper input. The instructions will hopefully clarify this.
