I don't know what to tell you to do to fix this but I am convinced there is a broken ground somewhere in your system. When you ground one of the spark plug wires, you complete the circuit to ground allowing the other to fire.

You are not real specific as to that kind of Lawn Trimmer or Edger this 18 HP twin engine is hooked to nor what kind of 18 HP engine this is: electric start or magnito fired.

Look for a broken ground somewhere in your ignition system please.

Hi Anonymous, on twin cams make sure both spark plugs are in heads and use a grounded third plug to check for spark or hold spark plug cable close to spark plug in head. If still not getting spark the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Battery voltage below 8.7 volts, loose or broken battery cables especially ground cable to frame.
3. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
5. Faulty ignition coil or ignition / electronic module
6. Failed CKP, CMP, MAP or BAS sensor.
7. Faulty ignition switch.

No fire to spark olugs, sat up for 6 mos, drained

Remove the wire that runs between both coils and try it again. If it starts you have a bad diode wire or a short to ground in the wire or shutdown system.

Hi, my harley doesnt fire until i release the starter button.

Take your battery out and take it somewhere to have it tested. It sounds like your battery voltage is dropping below 10 volts. I'm curious to know how you discovered that the plugs doesn't fire until you release the starter button. On most of the Twin Cam engines, the engine is equipped with a compression sensor and the plugs will not fire unless the engine has compression. In other words, you can't check for the spark plugs firing like you to do by taking the out and laying them on the cylinder heads.

To check for spark, leave you old plugs in the engine. Get another set of spark plugs and put them in the wires and ground them. Turn the ignition switch on and spin the engine. Check to see if the plugs are firing. I made up a set of "test plugs" that have a short "ground strap" on them with alligator clips to ground them with.
