L15 lost usb ports

Got hot and I turned it off. Wouldn't reboot to hard drive. Just to setup or blank black screen.
Blew it out (really clean) reseated memory and hard drive. It booted after that and runs fine except for NO USB.
Tried every driver trick I know, reloading, looking for new drivers etc. Always say they are working.
Stick in wireless mouse controller or memory stick and lights on them don't come on.
I am stumped. One shop said over phone that it's probably fried and not worth working on,
Please any help would be appreciated.

Hello. I also had the same problem (USB's on the side and back both stopped working). The computer became very hot and froze on multiple occasions. The computer is running now but I still can't get the USB devices to work even though I tried the Flash BIOS solution listed. Any other ideas? Thanks.

I have the same problem. I downloaded 8 driver updaters and detectives and all i got was one usb to work. one is cleary damaged, but the other just says device unkown. I have disabled, and uninstalled. I've tried rolling back the driver on the remaining unknown port, but nothing. Also the only usb port i have recognizing isn't even reading as a 2.0. Already downloaded new intel 82801db/dbm host controller too.

Lol you and the shop are complete fruits. initialy you should have run safe mode to log on and solve cpu speed or fan speed issues.

lol no usb...hahhA what was windows install doing... not finding drivers i take it... go on to the Internet and search for usb driver with the computer model number.

solution 3: reinstall a new/different/compatible OS

PS: The CPU makes it hot and the fan makes it cold(when you give it ventilation), this is when ITS(CPU and bocked fan) is being over worked uninstall all the shit ""LIKE#2"" spy-ware you got and stop all pointless startup programs.

XD for me

I have a Medion Akoya E5211 laptop that won#t reboot

How far through the boot process will it go? What version of windows are you running?

To get your data off the hard drive you have a couple of options. The easiest is to take the hard drive out and mount it as a second hard drive in another computer, then simply access the drive from windows and copy your data.

If your laptop is more than a couple of years old (has a pata drive) or your computer does not have an open sata port, then you can use an adapter like this to connect it to any computer with a USB port.

If you don't want to remove your hard drive (and you have a spare usb thumb drive laying around), then you can make a bootable usb drive to boot your computer and copy your files either to another networked computer, or to a usb memory.

To do this, go to http://www.ubuntu.com/download to get a copy of ubuntu linux... click on the "Try it from a CD or USB stick" option.

On the page that opens, under step 1, click on start download to begin downloading the latest version of Ubuntu. You'll probably have better driver support with the 32 bit version.

Then go to step 2. Select "USB Stick" and click on "Show Me How" and a fold out will open with more instructions.

You will be asked to download a utility to mount Ubuntu on your USB drive (needs to be at least 2GB capacity). Download this utility to the same folder as the Ubuntu installer.

Once Ubuntu has finished downloading, run the utility and follow the rest of the instructions from the Ubuntu download page. Note that the instructions refer to version 11.04, but the current version is 11.10.

If you followed their instructions properly, you should now have a bootable USB drive. Insert this drive into an open usb port on your laptop and start it up.

You will most likely need to go to your bios setup and change the boot options to include USB devices. Make sure it it set to check the usb device before the hard drive, or it will just keep trying to boot to the hard drive.

to get into your bios setup you need to hit a key while your machine is first booting... it should tell you something like "Hit F2 now to enter setup". F2 is the most common key, but it could be the delete or some other key.

Once you set up the bios, save the changes and exit to reboot your computer. It should now detect the USB drive and boot to Ubuntu.

Ubuntu is a linux based OS and has good driver support for newer computers, so you should be able to connect to a wired or wireless lan without too much trouble.

I have a dell inspiron e1405 and when i turn it on i get a black screen with a message that says "NTLDR is missing". what is the problem and what can i do?

The first thing to check is that you don't have a CD/DVD in the drive, or a flash drive inserted in a USB port. Your machine's BIOS is probably configured to first try to boot to a CD, or a removable device, and only THEN to the hard drive. So...assuming that this is not the case...

The NTLDR file (the boot loader file) is either corrupted or missing. If you have your Windows installation CD, you can then boot from it and use the Repair function.

Type "R" at the Welcome to Setup screen. Select the OS you want to repair (usually "1"). You will be asked for an administrator password...if you have set one, enter it, otherwise just hit Enter with a blank.

Assuming that your machine is using the standard drive assignment letters, type in the following at the command prompt:

copy d:\i386\ntldr\ c:\
copy d:\i365\ntdetect.com c:\

Notice that the backslashes are REVERSE...found just above your Enter key.
Then remove the CD and reboot.

If this does not solve the problem, there are two possibilities. The first is that your Windows boot files are badly corrupted, and you'll have to reformat/reinstall Windows. The second is that your hard drive may be failing, in which case a reformat/reinstall won't help.

If you have someone available with a USB/SATA adapter, you can remove the hard drive from your computer and have them hook it into theirs as an add-on drive. If they can access the drive, they should do a check disk routine to see if it is having physical problems. If so, you know what the basic problem really is.

If the drive is physically OK, but badly corrupted, you may need to reconsider what you are using for malware and/or virus protection as these can sometimes cause this sort of problem.

Hope that's helpful.

Check the status of your hard drive in setup. You probably just lost your hard drive boot sector...which means you need a new one!

I have a 1 tb desktop type network storage drive of Iomega. I installed it couple of days back. Every thing seems working fine except that the drive shuts down on its own every few hours say appx 5-6...

Since your using NAS storage I assume the 1 TB drive is connected via your router? Is it powered by the USB port or plugged in via AC Adapter? If your powering the drive via USB go to the router setup page-NAS setup and make sure the router is not telling the USB port to save energy by powering down. Make sure the port is always on. The Router setup is proprietary to the Brand of router my Netgear R7000 with Kong DD-WRT Mod has a setting that controls power to the USB Ports. Make sure the drive enclosure isn't hot they have a tendancy to power down if they get to hot. Clean the vents if it has any so the drive stays at a normal operating temp

All the usb ports have stopped working, so my printer/scanner and mobile phone downloads are not accessable, nor is my external hard drive that i back up everything on. Front and back of machine!

You may want to check the BIOS settings; reboot and repeatedly press F2 until the setup screen appears. Check the onboard devices section and make sure that the onboard USB ports are enabled, then press F10, select 'Save and exit'. The system will reboot; check the ports again

Setup does not detect any hard drives

This error means the operating system on the hard disk couldn't load due to possible faulty hard drive or disk controller. The fault could also mean the hard drive needs reseating to make proper connection. Reseat the hard drive and if you still get this error, then you need to determine if the disk controller is faulty.
To do this, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port. If this computer see this hard drive as an external drive and you can also see the contents of the drive, then the hard drive is OK and the fault is a faulty disk controller. If the computer cannot detect the hard drive then the hard drive is faulty.
Then get a new hard drive insert it into youe laptop and install Windows to get your laptop operatioal.

Installed western digital external hard drive, when i boot up my screen is blank no desktop

Is the drive USB or Firewire? If so, disconnect the drive from the USB/Firewire port, reboot the pc and then connect the drive. Windows should then find and install the drive.

Hi

I am Toshiba Specialist. I have encountered similar issues. Best and most effective solution is Flashing the BIOS for newer version. All you need to go Toshiba's support website http://support.toshiba.com and locate your exact model and go to download section get the latest BIOS. There will be 3 methods available (FDD/CD/Windows) so you can choose the most convenient method. As you will see the warning BIOS flashing requires extra care like keep the AC power and do not run other aplications during the flashing the BIOS. when flashing complete it will restart the computer and it will resolve the Issue.

Good Luck
