Question about JVC Cybercam GR-DVL520 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

2 Answers

I have a JVC GR-DVL 520 that has not been used for some time. I purchased a new battery and charger, charged the battery fully, inserted a tape. When I tried to record, I got the E03 message - "unit in safeguard mode" eject and reinsert tape. I have tried removing and reinserting the tape numerous times, as well as changing the battery and still get the same message. I saw one response on this site that mentioned a reset button in the battery compartment which I cannot find. Please help as I have an event I would love to be able to film Thank you

thank you. I imagine that is the problem - the tape that is in the camera has been in there probably a year or so - I had misplaced the camera and just found it. Will purchase new tapes and keep my fingers crossed :-)

I tried new out of the package tape - newly purchased and continue to get the same message. I have used compressed air to blow out the tape compartment and still no change. The camera probably was never used more than 5 hours when it was new and has been in a closed camera case in storage in our house.

If there is not a "fix" available, is replacing the tape mechanism very expensive?

E03 error code means problem with Take-up Reel table that is not spinning properly and system control chip missing Take-up reel FG pulse/ signal.
reason can be either bad / stiff tape or defective mechanism of camcorder.
Try few other tapes in camcorder and if problem still exist, replace tape mechanism by qualified camera tech.

You may have a mechanism/tape basket problem or drum head/motor problem. If you want to have it repaired you can contact JVC at (800) 252-5722 for repair and warranty coverage info. I would recommend having the camera replaced because of how fast the technology moves and the price for repair compared to the price of a new one with all new parts and new warranty. You can always sell the parts on ebay or craigslist to recoup some of the cost of a new one. If you need any further assistance please let me know.
Thank you,

Keep getting 0E4 CODE ????? ON JVC MINI DV

In the case there is no DRUM FG input in the
drum rotation mode for 4 seconds or more. This
error is defined as [E04], and the mechanism
mode is shifted to STOP with the pinch roller

1. The drum cannot be started or drum rotation is stopped
because tape transport load is too high.
1) Tape tension is extremely high.
2) The tape is damaged or soiled with grease, etc.
2. The DRUM FG signal is not received by the syscon
1) Disconnection in the middle of the signal line.
2) Failure of the DRUM FG pulse generator (hall element).
3. No drum control voltage is supplied to the MDA.

Gr-dvl-520u trying to record or playback tape it goes into safeguard mode within 5 seconds. alternatly pressing play and still every 3 seconds advanced the playback without it going into safeguard mod

According to,

"JVC notes that you are also given a malfunction code when the unit is placed into safeguard. If it displays code 01, 02, or 06 you should remove
the battery and powersupply and wait for a while. Code 03 and 04 indicate that you should eject and reinsert the tape.

If neither of these solutions work, your only alternative is to bring it to a shop or send it to JVC for diagnosis or repair. Unfortunately, there is no other way to clear the condition."

If you are getting E03 or E04 errors on every tape you try, it sounds like a servicing is required.
