Fuel Starvation - Float Bowl Carburetor
1) remove air filter assembly
*be cautious of tearing the mounting gasket. If it does tear, you HAVE to replace it. It is part of the priming system
2) remove the float bowl fastener. This is the main jet
3) carefully remove the float bowl, the rubber o-ring/gasket will not be able to be used if it is removed, you WILL have to replace it
4) using a spray 'carb cleaner'
spray up thru the center of the carburetor
spray and clean the main jet with cleaner and 'tag' wire
(tag wire is very thin, and can be used to clean the hole in the center of the main jet)
5) clean any debris from inside the bowl or carb body
6) re-install bowl and center bolt, air filter assembly

*if you need gaskets, your Briggs dealer can supply. The kit is cheaper than individual gaskets, and all the parts needed to finish the above repair are in the kit.

1) How have you determined that there is no spark?
2) Have you used a type of spark tester?
3) What is the condition of the plug. Brown or dark brown is OK. Black or silver is NOT Ok.
*If you do not have a spark tester,
a) remove the plug, and with it connected to the wire,
b) find a portion of metal around the cylinder that you can ground it on, and then pull the rope.
c) If the plug is black, you may see spark, but you should replace the plug.

*** PLEASE NOTE ; if there is excess fuel in the cylinder or on spark plug,
it can catch fire, so be carefull to cover the hole with a heavy rag so that any fuel
cannot be exposed to spark plug durning test !!!!
Get back with me on how this issue works out.
thanks, rwvanlue

MOWER WON'T START

sounds like you need to drop the bowl on your carburetor and clean the Jet.
Take the 1/2" bolt out of the bottom of the Carburetor Bowl. Look at it. It has two holes close to the Bolt Head. 1 small hole down the center of this hollow bolt and possibly a real tiny hole at the end of the bolt where the Threads stop. Make sure they are cleaned out and not clogged. screw it back in and see if that solves teh problem. Use a spray can of Carburetor cleaner and a small wire to clean the Jet holes

Mower isnt running properly. changed the spark plug, cleaned the air filter, and checked the oil level, still wont run properly. mower is only 1yr old. any suggestions?

It could be a couple of other things. But the things you have already doe are good!

1. Is it possible that water got in the fuel or fuel tank? This would cause the mower to run rough.
2. You may have a dirt in the carburetor, restricting the gas flow.
3. You may need to replace the gasket and diaphragm ($5.00) in the carburetor. You should do this anyway if you are gonna remove the carb. to clean it.

I'm attaching a Video to help you do this; just click the link::

This carburetor may not be exactly like your, but very close.
Good Luck!

HI there, I got a lawn mower mtd yard machine briggs ans stratton 4,5 hp, it start pretty well but won't stay running, I change the spark plug, oil, gas brand new, clean the carburator, clean the air...

There could well be a build up of sediment and debris in the main jet to the carburetor. It is easy to get to and clean. It is the brass bolt that holds the lower float bowl onto the main body of the carburetor. To clean it, drain your gas. Remove the bolt and external washer UNDER the carburetor bowl. Clean out the bowl of any sediment and/or water. To clean the brass bolt, use no metal objects. Carb/Choke aerosol spray cleaner will do the job. Pay close attention to the hole in the bottom of the bolt and the very small holes about 2/3 of the way up the bolt. Clean till shiny with holes cleared and reinstall. Your fuel flow problem and shut off condition may be solved.

I have a yard machine 5.75hp self-propelled mower won't start

Sounds like you will need to clean your carburetor.

Sometimes you can get by with priming it a few times, and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
If the mower/weedeater is over a couple years old, then I also recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, You will first seat the jet screws and count the number of turns it takes to seat the jets from their original position.
That way when you go to put the jets back in, you know how many turns they were in/out.
Please do not forget to rate me, Thanks
Good Luck, I hope this helped

Yard machine 123cc 22inches start and shut off

Did you clean out the carburetor jet? It is the brass screw that holds the bowl on the carburetor. Use a piece of wire and some carb cleaner to clean it out. Do not use a drill to clean it out!
Good day.

The carburetor jets are plugged. Complete disassembly & soaking in carburetor cleaner then re install parts after rinsing off & drying them. Make sure all ports are open. Torch tip cleaner is helpful.

I have a push mower i changed the spark plug it starts but then stops

Most of the starts but dies problems are caused by dirt/water/debris in the carburetor float bowl.

You can try draining the gas out of the carburetor float bowl by removing the float bowl nut located on the bottom of the carburetor.

Make sure the hole in the float bowl nut are clean. If the problem persists after draining the float bowl nut you will have to remove, dis-assemble and clean the carb with compressed air and carb cleaner.

Have Bolens series 080 22" mower w/Briggs & Stratton engine- starts but always quits after 2 minutes- changed oil, spark plug, and cleaned air filter.

When you take off the carburetor initially, you should change the gasket if it tears or just old looking, your problem is in the carburetor, probably. Take it apart remembering where the parts go. There are some diaphragms or gaskets and screens on some, tiny jets and such that are inside the little "bulb" or bowl, that can usually be taken off with a 10mm wrench. They also have little fiber gaskets and a bowl gasket or o-ring that must be in great condition with no trash. Clean off with starter fluid or carburetor cleaner.
