Re: Can't read the screen

That's just the contrast and brightness of your screen. all you need need to do is to hit 2nd and then hit the up arrow. you will need to do this several times for it to get darker. Everytime you do it you need to hit the 2nd key and then the up arrow.

When i turned on my calculator and began typing numbers, the numbers appeared really light on the screen and could barely be seen. what is wrong with my calculator? can it be water damage?

Adjust the screen contrast. Turn the calculator on. Press and release the 2nd key, then press and hold the up-arrow key until the numbers darken. If you go too far, repeat the process with the 2nd and down-arrow keys.

The words and numbers that show up on the screen are really hard to make out. They are really light and barely noticable.

Adjust the screen contrast. Turn the calculator on. Press and release the 2ND key, then press and hold the up-arrow key for a couple of seconds to darken the screen. If you go too far, repeat the process using the 2ND and down-arrow keys.

Only the first graph is shown

When you enter a function you should press [ENTER] to validate. At the same time, the cursor moves to the next line. Verify that the = sign on the equation already entered is still highlighted.
If for some reason the = sign of an equation is no longer highlighted, use arrow keys to move cursor on the = sign and press [ENTER].

If only one = sign remains highlighted and all others are not, then in all probability the application Transfrm has been executed before and is still lingering in RAM. When in RAM, it takes over the graphing capabilities of the native OS. This prevents you from drawing more than one graph. You must unload it from memory.
  1. Press the [APPS] key.
  2. Scroll down to the line that shows Transfrm.
  3. Highlight it and press [ENTER].
  4. In following screen you are invited to Uninstall or continue.
  5. Press the number to the left of Uninstall. Validate if need be.
  6. Return to the Y= editor to type in functions to graph.

I just changed the batteries and the screen is black when i turn it on if its in direct light i can see what i am typing..

I had the same problem as this. This is because when you might have changed the contrast on your calculator when your old batteries were running low and you need to reset the contrast. Here is what you do:

press the orange "2nd" button, then press the "down arrow" button, then the orange "2nd" button, then the "down arrow". do not press the buttons at the same time only one after the other and KEEP GOING. The screen will eventually lighten up and you are all set.

My Ti-84 recently stopped working. I tried using

Let us start with the easy stuff:
  1. The warranty is for one year in the US and Canada. The length my differ in other poarts of the world. Check the documentation that shipped with your calculator.
  2. If you want to have it repaired, you can contact the TI customer care services: email them at, they should be able to tell you where to send it, take it, and much it should cost you.
  3. The lowest retail price for the calculator in Canada is 130 $CAN.
  4. No, I cannot tell you if this mulfunction is common with this type of calculators.
  5. To tell you the truth I am not even convinced (without proper diagnostics) that the calculator is malfuctioning. Call me a doubting Thomas.
The fisrt diganostics you should perform are:
  1. Make sure batteries are good and inserted correctly, respecting the polarity diagram: Yes, I myself made this mistake and it must be ruled out before doing anything else.
  2. After a change of batteries, the screen contrast can change: It may become too dark or too light. If it is too dark, you would not think about a malfunction because you see something on the scree. BUT it the screen is too light, it is easy to conclude that there is a malfunction because you do not see what the calculkator is doing after you press a key.
  3. So, the second measure is to adjust the contrast. Press [2nd] key and Release it. Then Press and HOLD the UpArrow until screen is dark enough.
  4. A third easy measure is to use the TIConnect software (available on to retrieve the device Info, and if calculator is recognized to reinstall or update the OS. You need a TI USB SilverLink cable.
Here are some more procedures to perform in the order they are presented. Please read the post till the end.

  1. Remove one of the AAA batteries.
  2. Press and hold the [CLEAR] key.
  3. While holding [CLEAR], reinsert the AAA battery and then
  4. turn the calculator on.
  5. The calculator should display the message "RAM Cleared".
  6. Release the [CLEAR] key and then press it one more time to remove the message "RAM Cleared".
  1. Remove batteries including the backup battery for 5minutes.
  2. After the 5 minute period, reinsert all of the batteries and
  3. turn the calculator on.
  4. Adjust the contrast if necessary. (see above)

This step requires the reinstallation of the system. So to use it you must download the TIConnect 1.6 software from You must have the TI USB SilverLink or the TI Black serial cable ready. You must be connected to the Internet.
  1. Remove one of the AAA batteries.
  2. Press and hold the [DEL] key.
  3. While holding [DEL], reinsert the AAA battery and then
  4. turn the calculator on.
  5. The calculator should display "Waiting...Please install calculator software now".
  6. Connect the TI Connectivity cable between the computer and the calculator.
  7. Click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OS Downloader.
  8. Follow the on-screen directions to reinstall the calculator's OS.
If the message "Error! Press any key to turn unit off. Then turn unit back on." appears on the graphing calculator, quickly, remove one battery from the calculator and reinstall it while the transfer is taking place.

You have several ways to connect the calculator
  • Serial Black cable that used to ship with the TI 83 Plus. It connects to a serial port on a computer and to the I/O port on the calculator. It requires the Graph Link software available on the TI web site (Downloads, Software and Apps, Connectivity)
  • USB Silver Link cable. It connects a USB port on the computer to the the I/O port on the calculator. It requires the TI connectivity software, also available on the TI Web site.
  • A USB mini A to mini B cable to connect two units.
  • An I/O cable to connect two calculators through their I/O ports.
