Question about Guardian Electrical Supplies

The generator will not run

The generator is three years old. I noticed it did not run it's weekly test. I tried to start it but the starter would not click in. I just hear a little click and then nothing. The fuse is good and I checked and cleaned the battery cables. The battry is fully charged. What should I check next?

I had an 8kw unit from Guardian I put in last year. The starter was defective direct from the factory. If your battery is at full charge and voltage good, with tight connections to the starter it may boil down to the starter itself. Call the warrenty dept. for the company and tell them it should be covered.

Why is there no output?

You need to determine if it is a Brushed or Brushless generator and follow the tests on the link below. (You will locate the brushes on the end of the alternator in a 12o'clock position if they are fitted).

Twice my 14 KW has faulted on low voltage, reset and tried it again and it run just fine. Both times it was after a very cold weather condition below 0 temps. Would it help to put some type of heat trace...

I do not like to see generators exposed to those conditions ever put into service without some sort of heater that energizes on cold conditions. When a generator starts, it quickly goes to full speed in order to provide the correct frequency AC power. Normally, engines do not like this abuse! Your dealer should be able to guide you re available options.

Kohler 12 RES - Unit fails to start occasionally. Attempting a manual start by placing switch in run position, cause a loud click, but no cranking. The panel says CC. This morning I put a jump start...

I finally solved the intermittant starting problem on my Kohler 12 RES by replacing the strater and the starter relay. I was also experiencing the occassional OC indication, red blinking LEDs on the ATS, and intermittent non-starts during the weekly exercises. The problem happened during power outages a couple times also. If I flipped the start switch between auto and run quickly the generator would occasionally start. Once started, the generator runs fine. I ordered a new starter, which included the starter solenoid. By the way, don't worry about the genuine part thing..the old starter was a Delco made overseas. I ordered a new starter online for $85 (6744N) and it was indentical to the genuine Kohler starter. Replaced the starter and it improved the problem but did not totally solve the intermittent starting. Ordered the starter relay (GM49746) replaced it and the problem is solved.

It sounds like the alternator is the problem and that the starter is on it's way out. Even if the alternator tests okay with an amp meter, it can still be an issues, especially if it is more than 2 years old. If you continue to run the car without changing the alternator and doing a light tune up, you'll probably need a new battery too, even though you just got a new one. If you have to jump it more than three times in a week, the battery gets over loaded, even new ones.

Seems like a starter or battery problem-truck is slow to star.

Have your battery tested. It's free to test at most parts stores. They might even do a free starter test if you have the car there. Check your cables and cable ends. Don't forget to check the cable ends at the starter. I think you may need the starter replaced. Always check the cheap things first.

Small 7kw Generac has always sounded rough over the three years we've had it. Oil and plug are fine but lately, after warmup, engine seems to misfire and eventually shuts off during the normal weekly test...

If the generator is out of warranty, you can try spraying a short shot of ether into the intake of the generator as it is running rough. If the engine smoothes out for a few seconds, and returns back to original state, then it is likely running lean. Check the gas regulator (this is LP or natural gas I am assuming since it is standby), the vent may be clogged on the bottom of it.

I have a 3 year old Coleman Powermate 6250

Try this! To excite it. Shut off the generator! Unplug everything,Then use the 12 volt battery to excite it per manual. Make sure the engine is NOT running and the breaker switch is in the on position. Now with the battery 12V removed restart the generator! This should fix it if the problem is that it lost its magnetism.

Honda EU3000is generator will not start with electric starter.

I'd say your battery in the generator is going bad or bad. They are very small and do not hold a charge for very long. The noise you heard was probably the starter shaft hitting the flywheel cogs. I doubt any harm was done as long as you did not repeatedly try to start it with the key. Why Honda put a battery in these is because they are intended for use in a campground setting, where they would be used on a daily basis and the battery would constantly charged. Whereas people like us buy them for emergencies only, they sit for long periods, and the battery goes flat, and the fuel clogs the carb and we get the surging issue. That's my 2 cents. When I brought mine home new, I Sta-bil'd the heck out of the gasoline, this past winter, on start-up, the unit surges. Of course the battery was flat.
