Question about Kenmore 53642 / 53644 Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Ice maker/water dispenser

Neither of these work at the push in on the door. We rigged it so the button would depress the switch that triggers ice/water dispensed but it has stopped working. Any solutions?

we actually had someone come out and look at it and they said it was a bad actuator. They quoted $260 for parts and labor.....

  • Debramelia Jan 27, 2008

We thought so too. They would not even give us an written estimate--just told us the what the total would be. 80 for part and 160 for labor. I think we will get a second opinion....

  • Debramelia Jan 28, 2008

Yeah, maybe. If its not too involved a process. My husband is pretty handy so he may be able to do it with some guidance....

Are you still making ice in the icemaker?? if so then you most likely have a bad water inlet valve (back of unit right side behind the panel) The crappy thing is the icemaker and the water are on what is called a dual valve you have to replace the whole thing.. to test this you will need to sw the wires if you want to get into this let me know

Dispensing ice not working but makes ice fine and water works also

If your refrigerator has an ice dispenser, you are probably used to getting ice right away when a lever or button
is pressed. However, if you depress the ice maker button and nothing dispenses, there is an issue with your
refrigerator. There are a few different reasons why an ice dispenser would suddenly not work. It is important to
troubleshoot your refrigerator first to determine the problem. Some problems can be fixed at home, while others
must be repaired by a professional.

1. Remove the ice bin from the freezer and press the button on the front of the refrigerator for cubed ice.
2. Open the freezer door and hold down the switch on the door, which "tricks" the freezer into thinking the door is
closed, and push the lever or button to dispense ice. The motor behind the ice bin should turn. If it does not,
this means the motor is frozen.
3. Remove the motor, following the directions in your refrigerator's manual. Heat and dry out the motor with a hairdryer until the motor turns again, then reinstall the motor according to the manufacturer's directions.

Have a nice & a happy day : ).

Water not getting to the ice maker and water outlet. Put on a new line didnt; help. I didn't have water hooked to for a few years.

When both the ice maker and the water dispenser do not work the problem is usually the door / light switch. Check the door switch and make sure the light goes out when the door switch plunger is depressed. The light can work normally but the swtch can still have failed. The switch has one loveing tab on one side of it that you replease with a thin knife blade and coax the switch out of the cabinet. There are 3 contacts on the switch C (common) NC (Normally open) and NC (Normally closed) Read continuity as follows:
Common C to NC with the plunger extended.
Then with the plunger depressed C to NC.
It must read continuity for the ice maker and water dispenser to work.

This manual will help you:
http://applianceassistant.com/pdf/inDoorIceSystem.pdf
Just note the door switch plunger is taped down to perform any tests.

The outside door water does not work

Can I assume the ice and water are activated by two different switches? The ice switch activates the motor that dispenses ice. The water switch activates a solenoid that opens to dispense water. If you can, find the solenoid and make sure it's not stuck closed (tapping it with a screwdriver handles usually help persuade it a bit). I would tap the solenoid while pushing the water button. Listen for the solenoid to activate. If you can't activate the solenoid, find the switch and depress it with a small screwdriver. Usually, these switches are just simple little microswitches that need a little cleaning and coaxing

The ice maker and water dispenser does not work. There is no power to the exterior dispensing unit on the refrigerator.

I'm assuming you are saying there is no ice and water being dispensed, but that the ice maker is producing ice.

Actual ice maker operation is independent of the fountain which is for dispensing only.

The power is checked at the fountain board on wires Red/Black and White. The door must be closed when doing this check as power goes through the door switch. If no power is present, check the same wires at the connector under the upper door hinge cover.

The next check would be Red/Black to Blue while depressing the actuator pad button.

Outputs off the board are Pink to auger motor, Black to fountain water valve, other Black to fountain light, Violet to cube solenoid, the two brown wires go to the ice chute door solenoid.

The ice maker can be checked by removing the plastic cover up front. Check test points L to N for 120VAC. Short test points T and H to cycle the ice maker. Make sure it does not have ice or water in the mold already, or it will run over.

Of course last but not least, check water to the refrigerator. It is a dual valve and unlikely both solenoids could fail at the same time.

In door water and ice cube not working

Water dispenser is a simple touch switch in door energizing a solenoid water valve behind ventilation grate above refrigerator. Water tube runs down into and ends at ice dispenser chute. Should hear solenoid click at top of fridge when activate water touch switch. Can unhook discharge side of solenoid valve temporarily to prove water output. If water dispenser tube acts blocked it could be frozen where it ends-look up the hole at the bottom of refrigerator control buttons.
Ice maker is totally different system. No clicking when push ice button but ice in bulk tray may mean the simplest of malfunctions: Ice bin not pushed in the last half inch if ice auger not lined up with drive pegs. There are hidden switches behind ice bin that need to be engaged or nothing will happen in the ice maker: no auger noise, no clicking, no new ice making. Ice bin will be flush with sheet metal if it is in the right spot. Also plastic juice rack won't hang properly if ice bin not pushed in all the way.

On advice from the tech I removed acess door. It was covered by frozen moisture.
I removed the motor it was full of water. I verified 120 volts at plug to motor from control
by depressing the door switch and ice dispenser lever at same time. The motor ohms out
but because of amount of water removed from it I am going to replace it and see what happens.

check the mirco-switches behind the panel at the dispenser section. basically, when you depress the lever for water or ice, those levers make contact with a switch, and the switch turns on the ice dispenser motor. if the lever is pushed too hard, the switch can be knocked out of position. I had to re-position my ice switch with some duct tape.
