Question about Typewriters

Stuck in a Mode

Machine: IBM Wheelwriter 30 Series II

Hi, someone used our typewriter and hit a few keys and now the thing will not work properly. It appears to be stuck in KYBD 099 mode and anything we type comes up in musical notes.

More frustrated random keyboard bashing has yet to return the typewriter back to normal. I couldn't find any free manuals online and am not prepared to spend an extra $30 on a new manual.

Does anyone know where I could get a free manual or tell me how to revert it back to normal?

Re: Stuck in a Mode

These guys are repairers so they may have extra copies.
IBM's Typewriter's site also has manual for sale for less than $20.

The typewriter seems to have a bad ribbon cartridge or a bad typing wheel. Take each one out and try to see if it will type normal. If one does, then you know to replace it.

I've got a IBM Wheelwriter 30 Series II and several keys won't activate print or movement such as zxcvm,.Line up, Lock and Right Shift keys. Everything else seems to work?

Over time, the keyboards on Wheelwriters tend to go bad. Unfortunately, the only solution is to replace the keyboard or have it rebuilt. If you can get it out, there are a few companies that will rebuild them. If you're able, I can refer a company.

My IBM Wheelwriter 30 Series II has a message of a box and an X in it and then the numbers 215 can someone tell me how can fix this?

Check to be sure the printwheel to be sure it is properly installed, check for debris in the P/W area, If these are OK then the sensor is probably bad.

The book says turn the T/W off wait 30 seconds and restart, if condition returns call for service. However you might try removing the batteries and unplugging the machine waiting a few minutes and restarting. CAUTION ALL THE MEMORY WILL BE LOST!

try turning the machine off put a SMALL amount of oil on the large round rod running across the typewriter manually push the print head left and right a few times to see if it will loosen up. The problem is usually caused be drying oil you may consider having it serviced by a pro.
