Question about JVC KD-AVX40 Car Video Player

1 Answer

I installed the above mentioned stereo into a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan, using a factory wiring harness, and enclosed instructions. Also installed were a Sirius SIR-JVC1 radio tuner, and a SWI-PACK adapter to keep the original steering wheel controls for the radio. The SWI-PACK needs to be wired to the wiring from the steering column, which I do not have enough wiring knowledge to complete this task. Also, there is a wire that needs to be attached to the parking brake switch. This is so that the dvd player will not function unless the vehicle parking brake is on. Also, not sure where this is located in the vehicle, therefor, it is also not attached. The main issue I am having is when the radio is hooked into the wiring harness, the radio works, however, when trying to start the vehicle, it starts, then immediately shuts off. All the lights on the dash come on. Now, I have a check engine light on, the left head light does not work, and the switch that controls the left power sliding door does not work. I took the car to Auto Zone, and they advised the check engine codes are : U0140, U110C, U0101 & U0155. When I disconnect the harness from the radio, the vehicle will start with no problems, but the check engine light remains on. I called JVC, they seem to think it is a wiring issue. I did follow the wiring guidelines that came with the instructions, and did not splice any additional wires. Any idea what the issue may be?

There is obviously something that is grounding the power for critical communcation systems for the vehicle (all of the trouble codes are for lost communication with a sensor... one of the codes was for lost communication with the dash cluster) when the radio wiring harness is connected. The check engine light will remain on after the harness is disconnected because the codes have triggered the light to stay on until it is reset at ecm by an onboard scanner or negative battery cable is disconnected for 15 minutes to clear the code. You will need to get a correct wiring diagram that describes the color coding for each wire and what the wires are for. The radio should only be connected to the speakers, 12 volt keyed(switched), 12 volt constant, and radio should be grounded directly(not thru wiring harness). I would try disconnecting the ground wire(black) from the wiring harness and ground it directly to a good ground on the vehicle and see if that allows the vehicle to start & radio works.

And as far as the wiring from the steering column...these wires would als be part of one of the plugs that went into the factory radio. The way to identify these wires is to hook up a 12 volt test light to each wire then press the "volume up" switch on the steering wheel for example and check if the light comes on(getting power). Keep trying different wires and buttons untill you find one that lights the test light when switched or pushed. Then label that wire with the name of the switch. Then you will be able to connect SWI-Pack adapter for steering wheel controls. Let me know if you have other questions.

2005 dodge caravan, factory dvd... no sound through speakers

My grandcarvan sxt came with a remote for the DVD system and wireless headphones from KOSS. You have to press the headphone button on the remote to change it to headphones otherwise it comes through the main system. With the button pressed we can listen to cd or radio in front while they wear the headphones in back. You might need the remote to change it back to main system. The headphones from Koss are lifetime guaranty and not too expensive.

I tried to install an aftermarket stereo in my 2005 jeep grand cherokee but it didnt work because i had the wrong wiring harness. but when i tried to put the factory stereo back in it wouldnt work either....

Check that the yellow and the red wires have power while accessories is on, using a test light or multimeter. If they both have power, check earth connection.

How can I replace the stereo of a 2002 dodge caravan with 2001

The whole front plastic cover over the stereo and heater controls is screwed in with two screws at the bottom of the cover, just above the cupholders. Take out those two screws and then pop off the cover, which is held in place by clips up the sides and at the top. There are four bolt/screws that hold the radio/cassette/cd (whichever you have) in place. Unscrew them and replace the stereo. Plugs SHOULD fit, and if they do just replug it and you're good to go. If the plugs DON'T match up, get a wiring harness from Best Buy or Walmart.
But be warned! Just because the stereos look VERY similar and fit very nicely into the other spot in the dash, they may NOT have matching wiring plugs. I just put a 2003 Neon CD player into my 2002 Caravan, and the harnesses didn't match up and neither did the antenna.
Good luck!

99 stereo out of a 99 CARAVAN

Hello,
Unfortunately you cannot hook this stereo up with out the original plug that fits into the stereo unit. Once you have that then you could buy an wiring adapter that will break out the wires out of the original harness with labeled wires and you can just match them up and tape them together.
Good Luck
