You can buy a DVD drive for your laptop for about $60 on eBay. I found 7 results on eBay.

Remove the upper and lower filters from the registry

Upper/Lower Filters Fix

a. Click on Start --> Run --> and type in 'regedit' followed by the enter key
b. Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double clicking it (or clicking the "+" next to it.)
c. Expand the "SYSTEM" Key
d. Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key
e. Expand the "Control" Key
f. Expand the "Class" Key
g. Look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
h. Highlight this key by left clicking once on it
i. On the right hand side you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" under the "Name" column, once you find these delete them by right clicking on them and choosing "delete"
j. Exit the registry by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the screen

Reboot your computer

Make sure you're selecting the correct key.
There will be several keys that look like this one:

    {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

and remember when you click it, only click it one time, just highlight it. Then on the right hand side you should see "upper filters" and "lower filters".

To resolve this issue, change the transfer mode for your CD drive in IDE Channel Properties. To do this, follow these steps:

    1.
Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.

    2.
Under Computer Management (Local), click Device Manager.

    3.
In the right pane, expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

    4.
Right-click the channel where your CD drive is connected, and then click Properties. Typically, this channel is Secondary IDE Channel.

    5.
On the Advanced Settings tab, in the Transfer Mode box for the device that represents your CD drive, click PIO Only. Typically, this device is Device 1. Then click OK. If
the issue is not resolved after you change the transfer mode for the
secondary IDE channel device 1, your CD drive may not be located there.
Use the same procedure to change the transfer mode back to DMA if available. Then, repeat these steps to change the transfer mode for IDE devices in the following order until the issue is resolved:

    Primary IDE channel,
    device 1

Secondary IDE channel, device 0Note Primary IDE channel,
device 1 is connected to your boot disk. This is the hard disk that typically contains your operating system.

You don't need to worry about master/slave, you won't have those options with a laptop cd drive.

Can you try the upper/lower filters fix again?

I've fixed problems exactly like you're having several times by using this method. If that doesn't work, you probably have a malfunctioning drive.

  • Peter Burns Jan 09, 2008

Not likely that a virus would interfere with this.

  • Peter Burns Jan 09, 2008

There will be not cables to check. You have a laptop, correct? The cd drive in a laptop doesn't connect with a cable. It just plugs directly into the motherboard.

If it appears on my pc.. then it is recognized and the problem is that either needs cleaning or clean the disk... here is a link on HOW
other wise.. if you are installing the CDrom.. then it must mean that the pin configuration isnt right and you have to set it to slave...or the gray cable isnt well connected

if you didnt install the cd rom, then i doubt the problem is about the hardware... if you did connect the cables to the cd rom, then you must check if the cables are connected correctly... the gray cable is THIS cable
and this is a pict of the back side of a disk drive... the disk drive and the CDrom, at the back side are really similar... and to set a cdrom to slave, you have to move the white tiny block to certain position.. that position is shown in a diagram in the top side of the CdRom..

but again.. if you bought that laptop and it worked, then i doubt its hardware. and when you install something on a WINxp system.. it is recognized instantly.. specially a cdrom...but still you have to configure the cdrom if it will be on slave or master... so thats why i tell you, you have to set it to slave..

if you can see your cdrom on MY Computer.. then the CDROM its fine.. maybe it needs some cleaning, or maybe its to old or you are putting a dvd in the cd rom.. to know if its a dvd, the back side its usually purple...

  • Asdrubal Perez Jan 09, 2008

well.. you got it right.. when the computer recognizes your unit. it shows the icon on my pc.. like in the pict i am attachingso.. it must mean your cdrom is dead...
and to find the gray (IDE) cable, youd need to open the laptop..but I am sure it will not be too dangerous for you to do it.. but if you dont want to take the risk, you could go to your local pc store and ask them if they have any.. but finding one wont be easy, i have never seen one being sold in my country (but again, laptops here are a novelty).. your other bet could be using ebay or amazon to find a deal and let them ship it to you and then you go to a local store and ask them to install it for you... i heard from a friend that they charge around 25 bucks to completely build a PC.. i am not sure how much can someone charge for a laptop...

heres 1 bid for a cdrom for laptop
and here is a list of dvd burners that are way better than a cd rom because you can also burn and read normal cds and DVDS...
    hope that helped

  • Asdrubal Perez Jan 09, 2008

also. forgot to tell.. most of the times, when the unit doesnt work.. the reading light begins to flash in a usual patern.. because when it works and gets a cd.. it lights up like 3 times and then like crazy... when it doesnt get the cd working.. it just keeps for less than a minute flashing, and each flash last around 1 second or half a second.
that is the best way to know when your cdrom is almost dead..

Hi are you sure its not installed and just needs the lense cleaning if not then try this.
1 select start
2 select controll panel
3 select add hardware
4 let the laptop scan for hardware connected
5 when finished look down list untill you see cd dvd you want to use
6 select this if you have the disk then when it asks if you have disk check the box for you have.
Then follow instructions then it should install the correct setting from the disc you have if dont have disk then dont check box and then it will search the web for compatable software.
Let me know how you get on and if you need further help

My cd drive does not recognise cds

Okay. First of all is it a cd drive in your computer as opposed to a DVD drive? If you put a dvd into a cd drive it cannot recognize the dvd. A dvd drive can recognize a cd, but a cd drive cannot recognise a dvd.

Does your computer actually recognize the drive as being present?
If the drive isn't recognized by the computer try:

power off the laptop
Physically remove the cd or dvd drive
power -up the laptop without the cd/dvd drive
power off the latop and refit the dvd/cd drive
power it up again and see if the drive is
recognized

If the drive IS recognized by the laptop but won't play any disk it's probably the drive itself at fault. You can try gently cleaning the inside of the drive - the optic that reads the disk. However, the usual cause is failure of that optic which read the disk information. It cannot be repaired.

The alternative to fitting a new drive is to buy a portable dvd drive. They connect via a usb cable. Have a look on Ebay

I have a CD ROM that is no longer being recognized by my Vista laptop.

Hi, if after a few computer restarts, it still fails to recognize, save your important docs etc, and do a system recovery back before the time you noticed the error.

If after 2/3 attempts still no sign, you are looking at a complete system install!

But first try accessing "Device Manager" clich DVD/CD/Rom Icon. Click Remove.

Restart computer, hopefully this should force a new item found and installing prog sign should appear during startup?

I did PC restore using Dell F11 reset tool / no dvd or cd recogni

Go to Dell's support site and to their driver page. Put your model number in the box for a search and a page with your drivers will appear, download the drivers for your model and do a re-install of them. download them to a temp folder and when they are downloaded, double click and they will self install, put off rebooting until you install them all.

Did you leave the battery in the R32 for long enough for it to charge up? (Like overnight?) Another thought is that if you bought the battery used, it may not be any good.
